Re: OT - Civil War Movie picks...
Thanks Craig. Maybe those folks that feel the war never ended need to step back and re-evaluate. My thought is that if they still blame their problems on the past then they are not taking responsibility for their own future. I do understand some of the southern views. My Mom was very southern. Here ...

Re: OT - Civil War Movie picks...
I have always wondered what I would have done in that time and place. Haven't you? Now we know so much more than they did then that the choice simply can't be made on the same terms. But as a northerner, born and bread, I always would have bent toward the blue, especially when I was younger. I don't...

Gone with the wind is classic. I have the box set. Ken Burns' series is a documentary with transcript and pictures. Hard to beat that for accuracy. I have the box set on that as well. I thought "Andersonville", I think it was, was a very well done movie. I thought Shelby Foote was a wonder...

Of course it's Pete. Look at him.
Let me propose a proposition.

Re: Savage History
I agree that the mid 1890's would have been a wondrous time to be into the shooting sports. What with the coming of smokeless powder and all the marvelous things it shows potential for. The coming of nickle steels and better metallurgy making guns stronger. The guns of Winchester and Marlin being at...

Well, the spring was good to me. I'm all tagged out with over a week left in the season. According to the check station, birds seem to be harder to come by this year and a lot of the birds harvested were Jakes. That indicates a good hatch last year and good potential for 2 year old birds next year. ...

Season doesn't start until later in April here. I'll do my scouting the last two weeks before opening day to see where this years birds are patterning. By opening day I'll have an idea of where the roosting spots are for particular birds and know which way to walk to listen for them. I can hear bird...

Grizz. Many early ones were wrought iron with a shear steel face forge welded on. There were some cast iron with a steel face and some cast steel with a hardened face. Most of today's anvils are one piece cast. Remember that steel, when it it hot, is much softer than the anvil surface you are workin...

If you are looking for an old traditional anvil, be prepared to pay a few hundred dollars and up for one. However if you are patient and shop the farm auctions, garage sales, flea markets and such, they can be found and had for less. There are still a lot of them out there. If however you are into t...

You are on the right track. The Kao wool you are looking for can be found on the net. You may find the forge needs to be raised so you can see inside and don't have to bend over all the time. Try it for a while and see first. The Iforgeiron site is a good learning tool. Anvilfire also is another one...

Learn an ancient craft. Folks like the Potter, the Weaver, the Carpenter, the Gaffer, the Candle Maker, the Blacksmith and so on are always going to be in demand when goods are not available. Lee was an interesting and admirable person. I have often thought he would have made a good president. I have always been a student of the mid 1800's. They should be dropping right now. After the rut is over, and it is, and after the does that were going to breed had bread, and they have, then the antlers are of no use to the buck. They shed them so they don't have to haul the weight through the winter. Though some will drop earlier and some later...

It started the day President Kennedy was killed. Up until that that point folks still held that it was better to give than receive, to do a good deed and not ask for anything in return, to ask what you could do for your country and not what your country could do for you. Wow, I feel so philosophical...

Now I'm not a BMW man but I will say this. Kudos to the guy who designed the fire wall on those babys. BMW at 140 on the Autoban, deer in the road, and the windshield didn't even break.
