Re: The Genesis of Levergunning
If memory serves me right, the Spencer's seemed to get into action before the Henry's during "The Late Unpleasantness," with both seeing a limited but effective role. Not sure which was first in terms of just being first off the line.505stevec wrote:was the Henry first or the Spencer?

So we are back in 1890 and isn't this the deal as I stated now of course is a set of realitues that no one has really adapted to. But they started it in terms of what continued. Not so?

perfection was achieved in 1895 with the intrduction of the 30wcf added to the 94. 38-55, 30wcf,with the .356wcf added decades later. can cover it all.

Yes, Volcanic is the genesis, Winchester the "Henry Ford" of leverguns and all other "Johnny come latelys" are certainly not pretenders, but rather, attempts to add to perfection.hfcable wrote:one word: Volcanic

But a good one. Love these "on-topic" conversation starters!!!Tycer wrote:You pot-stirrer you.
I agree somewhat - when someone says "leveraction" the first thing that pops into my head is the Winchester 1892. That itself was simply an improvement on the concept started several decades before, but I guess growing up with all the "B westerns" ingrains one to visualizing the 1892 as the ultimate lever-gun.
Re: The Genesis of Levergunning
I think I have to spend more time in studying these type of topics. I am amazed by those on this forum who analyze the pictures and can pick out the differences of each of the various lever guns. YK's post just reminded me that I would have a hard time picking correctly between between a 1892 or 1894 or .... I need to get a clue!

Ooops, I posted in this thread again. Didn't mean to. Long live the Winchester 86/71 ... if your loading gate doesn't have two pieces, you're doing it wrong. Hit and Run.

Re: The Genesis of Levergunning
If we acknowledge that the lever action firearm as we know it evolved from the Henry of 1860 then yes, I'd agree with this statement.Old Savage wrote:The tube fed Winchester levergun is the genesis and center of all levergunning and all others are Johnny come lately pretenders.
The Marlins, Colts, and other lever action repeaters that came and went in the late 1800s, and the later Mossbergs were merely adaptations of the original Winchesters.

Re: The Genesis of Levergunning
Well, according to Herb Glass... The Winchester firearms story begins with Hunt Rifle designed to fire his "Rocket Ball" self contained ammo (similar if not the same as what the Volcanic used)His patent (#6663) was for a lever action, tube fed (under the barrel) breach loading repeater, which he called the Volition Repeater. He goes on further to say....From that evolved the Jennings,Smith & Wesson Volcanic repeaters, the Henry and Winchester repeaters.
As far as looks go, I'm down with those that say the Smith & Wesson - Volcanic.. I'd like to know when toggle links came into play...Jennings or Volcanic? Pics of the Hunt rule them out as best as I can tell.

Re: The Genesis of Levergunning
Delmar is a character from the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" starring George Clooney and a couple other guys who's names are unknown to me off the top of my head. The quote mentioned above comes from a scene in which the Clooney character and another leading character are arguing about who's boss. (IIRC) Delmar's response is "I'm with you guys!" - a delightful noncommittal way for the "simpleton" to not get on either guy's bad side.Old Savage wrote:Who the heck is Delmar?

I saw it before I knew who Clooney was. One positive thing about the movie - it's got a great sound track. At least, if you like ol' timey style music of the bluegrass/harmony type of pickin' and singin'... which I do.Old Savage wrote:Thanks Paul, since I don't see Clooney movies for the most part I wouldn't have got this.

Re: The Genesis of Levergunning
There are a bunch of lever action repeaters that lead up to the Henry. But as I see it, they were not successful enough to be made in the quantities that the Henry and later Winchesters were. This is why I used the phrase "lever action firearm as we know it".Old Savage wrote:Joe - that is what I am saying but I don't know if I am accurate in that thought.
If we look at the forums home page there is a listing of a bunch of lever action rifles. How many are known to most folks? Two, maybe three. Winchester, Marlin, Savage. And the Savage does not use a tube magazine.
I may not be right or accurate either, but I still agree with your thought.

Joe - there should be a term that only means tube fed leveraction rifles. Maybe "levergun".
