This appears to be a Lyman No. 5A, a combination front sight designed for either target work using the hooded sight or hunting using the "Barleycorn" open sight.

I have the Uberti-made 1876 in .45-60, a recent issue Winchester 86 takedown in .45-70, and a newer 1895 in .405. All have enough power for black bear, but if I were to pick just one it would be the .405 simply because it is lighter to carry, and bear hunting in my area usually involves a good deal ...

I recently traded into an identical rifle and gave it similar treatment. Smoothed the action, Lyman 17A front sight, and Marble's tang sight. It is not shooting too well with cast lead bullets, but a new experiment is in the works.

I would be interested to know how yours shoots for you.

I have a couple silhouette leverguns with the Shaver globe sight, but most of mine have the Lyman 17A as i have not found the level in the Shaver sight to be useful enough to warrant the extra $50 in cost. The Shaver insert card is a very good investment though.

Sounds like you got yourself a fine rifle there.
