Nifty new (to me) S&W .22lr
So I'm hanging out with my Dad when my Uncle shows up.
He says he's got a couple pocket pistols he wants me to sell for him.
First one is a New in the box Colt Jr. .25 ACP made under Colt Lic. In Spain.
Cool!
Second one he plops down and says "This one was Dad's" Meaning my Grandfather.
It's Brand new in the box with all the stuff. Case, manuals, warrenty card, the cleaning tools
still in the unopened bag. Like a litte time capsule from the early '70s.
Gotta Keep this one! (he says pay me when you can).
Grandpa passed away in '75. We think he bought this one just before he got sick, put it away and never fired it.
Here's a photo.
When I got it home I loaded the mag and tried to cycle some rounds through it.
Not a single round would chamber . I knew exactly what the problem was.
All the guns we got from Granpa B. were totally gummed up.
Granpa like to hose his stuff down once a month with WD-40.
Well it preserved everything really well but nothing worked.
A good cleaning and i was able to manually cycle several
mags of .22s
I'd take it out back and pop off a mag but all I have is HV .22s
Don't want to abuse it!
Anyway,
Don't really care if it works but now I have another one of my Grandad's
pistols!

I would think that you wouldn't damage it shooting HV ammo in it (at least a few rounds). It is a beauty, glad he took it to you to sell for him instead of just taking it to a pawn shop or gun shop and selling it himself.
Re: Nifty new (to me) S&W .22lr
wow, that is a beaut and you gotta love a gun with a connection. very nice. Happy for you JB

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THE ASTRA/COLT 25ACP ??
BY THE WAY, ASTRA LICENSED COLT TO SELL THESE AS THE COLT JR, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

The "Boss Lady" likes the .25 ACP. Trying to work a deal for both of them.Terry Murbach wrote:WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THE ASTRA/COLT 25ACP ??

Didn't know that the Astra came first. Thanks for the info!
My Dad has an identical one that has a
brown Colt box and no Spaish markings. Most accurate .25 ACP I've ever shot.

I've got a Smith & Wesson Model 61 Escort just like that one! It's not real accurate, but does function reliably. If I recall correctly, they made three variations of it and they could also be had nickel plated.

It is the 3rd model. Not a real popular pistol but S&W did make a bunch of them. The nickle version
is much harder to find.

I had a S&W 422 back in the late '80s. It looked somewhat like yours, except for the 6" barrel and ajustable sights...

Howdy
You are correct about when your Grandfather bought the S&W. I bought both of these guns brand new in 1975. I still have the boxes, papers, and the tools are still in their plastic bags. I can't tell you exactly when your Grandfather's gun was bought, but 1975 is right in the ballpark. A letter from Roy Jinks will tell you exactly when it shipped and where it shipped to. $50. Not a bad investment for a family heirloom.
Would you believe there are guys who collect the tools?
Nice find. Keep it in the family.

I don't know where we're going but there's no sense being late.
Re: Nifty new (to me) S&W .22lr
Mr Johnson... Is the top one a model 14?
In my opinion, the Model 19 is one of the most beautiful revolvers S&W ever made. Those both are very nice, the bottom one is just gorgeous!!!
Probably my favorite Smith revolver.

Top one is a Model 17-3 (K22), bottom one is a Model 19-3. Bought them brand, spanky new when I was just a kid. One of them cost $125 at the time, but I can't remember which one now. Maybe both of them cost the same. Lot of money for a kid back then. Had to save up for quite a while.

I sure do miss those old blue paper boxes, and the quality they contained.
Congratulations on being able to keep it in the family.

I thought at first that it might be a Model 17 but I thought that the cleaning rod in the box looked too big for a 22.
here is my pre-17 K22, I have the original grips put away. I actually prefer the feel of targets to the magnas.
Must be dust or lint on it because there are no scratches at all.

My 17 along with my 29. The 29 was given to me by the same Uncle that had the Model 61.

That's a nice gift. I have four uncles; all of them (plus my Dad) were hunters and had guns, but all had sons that wanted their guns.2ndovc wrote:My 17 along with my 29. The 29 was given to me by the same Uncle that had the Model 61.

I did get a Colt Police Positive 38 Special from my Dad's dad, another cousin got his Belgian Sweet Sixteen, and one other got his H&R topbreak 22.

Nice to hear from you! Was afraid you got abducted by aliens or something!
I'm working on it. Got it to fire but not feed yet. It's so gunked up from the WD that
its going to take a while to get it all out.

I always thought a S&W Escort would be a nice pocket pistol. I've never had the opportunity to hold or shoot one. Your lucky to have family like that.
