OT-- The mighty caterpillar can crusher

Post by Pitchy »

Well boys here it is, the can crush i said i`d build.
Decided to make it electric instead of running it with the steam engine as it will run long periods.
Anyway hope ya like it, i added a blade lift on it i`ll shoot a short vid tomorrow of it.

Video.

Pitchy, that is a fine piece of machinery. Looks like some of the old dozers I ran years ago on a TVA constuction project.

I love it!

Really like that magazine cut-off. So simple and effective with only moving part. Would work well on a sizer/luber for cast bullets. Just turn a star on it's side and there you go.

Cool.
All you need now is a solar panel to run the motor.
Oh, and some way to feed the cans into the chute, that won't wear out your arms

Does anyone know how or if i can reverse the direction of a electric motor, the crush has to run the direction it is ut i had to hang the motor way out to the side to have it turn the right way.

Got it, when all else fails follow directions that were plainly written on the name plate.

Got to thinking about the title of this thread and maybe the word cat was taken as the living kind. That was not the case the word was short for Caterpiller, sorry Joe, i changed the name.
Then after looking at the dozzer again and seeing it`s orange i guess it would be a Alice. :)

Ah Pitchy I knew what you meant. Nothing to worry about.
I didn't get to the video till this morning and for some reason all I can see of it is about 21 seconds. Then it goes to the "replay" screen.
But I love that little caterpillar. I want one.

Great job Pitchy! I'm wondering if you could add another feed ramp from the other side? That and a feed hopper(s), perhaps run it with an old Sears gasoline washing machine motor (?), get some vintage tractor decals on the cat and you'll be set to take that puppy up to Rollag for next year's steam thresher reunion.

Great work! :)

Best,
Oly

Thanks Oly, my intention was to crush three cans at once and we tried but they crush to hard and the belts slipped . We tried two cans and same thing so for now its one can.

Well got the lift going, a shute on the front to direct cans out and the motor turned around :D
Joe has been razzing me about driving one of my tractors so i put him on the dozzer, he put his Alice Chalmers orange shirt on and away he went.
Hes been doing a fine job. 8)

Thanks guys its workin pretty good, lots of bugs to work out when ya build as you go. Reduced the incline of the feed ramp and added a weight to the can catch arm.
