Re: Scout mount versus over the receiver.

Thanks to all who answered. You've given me some more to think about. Nice to hear from people who seem to understand that the perfect rifle is as much a work of art as a product of technology. A few comments Note heresy, it's called getting old. But this works for me, very well. No argument there. ...

Scout mount versus over the receiver.

I have a BLR in 308. It is a take down with he aluminum receiver. I installed the scout mount. I have a Williams WGRS with a ghost ring aperture mounted in place of the front dovetail. I replaced the stock front sight with a Williams blade. All in all it's a pretty nice rifle so far. I know it is pr...

Re: BLR

$450 is not bad price. I got my first BLR used, with a 3-9X40 scope, for $350 but that was ca 1987. I paid street price for a new takedown about six months ago. If I saw a BLR in good condition for $450 I'd probably snap it up. I put a 2-7X33 Leupold on mine and I never felt it was too weak. In trut...

Re: Kinda OT - Does anyone shoot the .17 HMR?

I have an older Savage bolt action equipped with a 3-9X33 scope. With the CCI 17gr HP or the equivalent Hornady round it shoots dime sized groups at 100 yards. Shoots very flat too. I've never shot at paper targets past 100 yards but if I sight it an inch high at 100 it hits coke cans about an inch ...

Re: The defensive levergun

The other long weapon, the second prong of my approach, is a Browning BLR, in .308 Winchester. I can slap another loaded box magazine into a BLR in less time that it takes to insert an individual cartridge into the loading gate of a traditional lever rifle. For those with experience with the Browni...

Out of curiosity I wrote to Federal asking about the performance 158 gr hydrashok from a rifle barrel: My question is how will the 158 gr hydrashok in 357 magnum perform at the higher velocities from a rifle? I recently chronographed the Federal hydrashok ammunition from a Marlin lever action at abo...

Re: Browning BLR's - do you ever see any on the shelves anywhere

what's wrong with the long action models, anyway? Nothing wrong but the long actions do feel a little different. I've shot a BLR in 308 (short action) and 270 (long action) and the short action just feels a little smoother to me. Really though, arguing about which is "better" is like comp...

I have a Marlin in 357 that I use as an "urban defense carbine". It's loaded with 158 gr Hydrashok and I keep a couple of speed strips with it for reloads. My only real concern is how the higher velocity affects the bullets. I've clocked the 158 gr Hydrashoks at 1800 fps and I'm not sure i...

Re: Browning BLR's - do you ever see any on the shelves anywhere

Don't know why but I rarely see one on display. I bought my first one used around 1990 at a local gun shop that had it on consignment. When I bought the takedown last year I had to order it. The wholesaler has it in stock so it only took a couple of days to deliver. Odd thing is I see quite a few of...

A Something like the 270 Herron Staggercyl would be pretty cool: http://www.bigheadpress.com/lneilsmith/?p=233 Oddly enough, such a revolver was made back in the 1880's. IIRC it ws a 12 or 16 shot revolver and I think it was chambered for a .32 caliber round of some sort. I'll dig out my copy of Fi...

So far I have only really tested the cup-nose rod but here is my procedure: 1. Slip the cartridge in and set the die on a wooden surface, make sure the cartridge is firmly seated. 2. Insert the forming rod. 3. Line up the mallet, raise it about eight inches and let it drop. 4. Knock out the reformed...

If I had to pick just one for all time I'd carry a S&W 686P with six inch bbl. If allowed a second handgun I'd pick a 442 as a hideout. If I'm allowed a third it would be a second 686P on my left side.

A Browning BLR (or equivalent) with a composite stock and an extended magazine holding at least eight to ten rounds. A twenty round magazine wouldn't hurt my feelings. This sling puts the tension between the upper arm and the forend avoiding bending stresses at the junction between the barrel and receiver.

I recently added a new BLR 81 take down to my "arsenal." So far it has been a great rifle. Except... The non take down version has a rod with a cap that holds the forearm on and Uncle Mike's makes a replacement spacer with a swivel mount. That's what I have on my older Model 81. However th...
