Front Sight Replacement?

Post by scarville »

I just put a Williams WGRS sight with the ghost ring insert on a Browning BLR. This is a backup sight. I was trying to bore sight it but it looks to me like the front blade may be too short. How can I tell if it needs to be replaced? I'll be taking the rifle to a gunsmith for some minor work so if the blade does need replaced that would be the time to do it.
What most people call a "right" is the equivalent of a dog walking on a leash. Just because your leash is a little longer than the other dogs' does not mean you don't have a master.

Well, I'd do it the hard way. I'd take it to the range, then adjust the rear sight to put it in the center of it's elevation. Then with the load I'm going to use, I'd fire a group at 100 yds. Then using one of the formulas available I'd calculate how much taller I needed the front sight. Then when the gunsmith has it I'd have him put in that taller sight.
Now the reason I said to center the rear sight is to give me some latitude for changing loads.

Here's a sight height calculation formula:

I would start at 25 yds with the rear sight right down. To me, elevating the rear sight with a front sight that may be OK, too low or too high at a range of 100 yds, adds too many complications. But that's me..... I need things kept simple - :D

williams had all that dialed in when I bought my reciever sight set, they are more than willing to help, and are very knowledgable, give them a call toll free,

I called Williams and the fellow at the other end knew exactly what I need. Or he sounded like he did :-)

Thanks all.
