It may have been Nickel, my brand new second hand Uberti 73 44-40 is Nickel. I just finished slicking it up with a Pioneer Short Stroke kit to make it a race gun for SASS, getting it ready for our State Titles. The Nickel plating left it a little tight & it took some smoothing out.

I have them in .243,.308,.338,.358 &.429. & have found them to be very good. I too have found the copper sheet much better than aluminium cans. They were very helpful & even spoke with CBE molds to make sure the .338 freechex would suit the custom mold I was having made up for my 33 WCF....

I use one on my BLR when Deer & Pig hunting. It s comfortable & quick on the target. Great while walking or on my quad bike, much quicker than out taking the rifle out of a quad bike rack or boot. It take a bit of getting use to but give it a try.

I bought my 256 off Guns America last year for $700 & had it shipped out to Australia, which cost as much as the rifle. They are great fun, very short throw on the lever, you can leave your thumb on the wrist of the stock & work it with your fingers.

A post here on Leverguns about this time 12 months ago introduced me to these books, which have been fascinating reading. Winchester1886 from Australia has contact with Pans family. There is another book I am half way through called 'The Legend of Pan Phillips'. They are all great reads.

My Model 53 is chambered for 32WCF and has a 22 inch nickel steel barrel. The serial number is 9087, and the date stamped under the barrel is 26, one year earlier tham Madis' date of 1927. I will try and get a photo over the weekend.

Looks like there is a few of us out there, my Hi - Powers full serial number is 3442, 32 remington. I got my brass from buffalo arms, cast some boolits in an original winchester 32 - 40 mould and it shoots great.
