OT - AR7
Anyone have an old AR7, and if so, have you ever found any ammunition it actually likes?
Every few years I get the bug to take this out and shoot it again. Then it irriates the snot out of me jaming every other round. I have never found any ammunition that reliably feeds in the sucker. Any luck brothers?

Re: OT - AR7
Years ago when I was an FFL holder I got a really good deal on Jennings J-22's. I was passing the deal on to as many as I could. We found then that the best functioning ammo in them was that cheap dirty firing Federal Bulk pack stuff that a lot of people didn't like. I even had one guy complain that CCI mini mags kept jamming up in his gun. While he was standing there whining I loaded up a mag with the Federal stuff, then proceeded to rip them off non stop like an M-60. He said How'd you do that? I showed him the ammo box and he walked away shaking his head. Just try everything you can get your hands on.

I have an Charter Arms AR7 I bought around 1976 shoots about anything I put in it. The feed lip angle on the magazine is the trick. Try wrapping electric tape around the magazine so it pushes the magazine away from the receiver making the feed angle steeper. If that helps feeding adjust the magazine lips so it feeds at the same angle without tape.

I bought a Charter AR7 about 1979 or 1980. After I tired of it I swapped it to a friend who still has it. It would/will eat anything with only an occasional fte. I don't think it has been cleaned since I owned it! It sits in the corner of his garage where he can grab it quick for use on varmints. It has been used to put several very ill or injured dogs and deer out of their pain. I have tried to get it back with no success.

This sounds interesting - I'm going to try it, and also try Rusty's idea on bulk Federal bullets. I think I read somewhere that these guns prefer high-velocity loads, but not "hyper" velocity ones. Anyone recall that? Wouldn't wrapping the magazine with electrician's tape make it hard if not impossible to insert into the magazine well?
Thanks!!!

Jay,
I ordered a new Henry AR7 several months ago, there were none in the UK at the time.
I'm still waiting for it to arrive, so I have been searching out all kinds of info on the net.
CCI mini mags seem popular and some folks use stingers but Henry don't advise any hyper velocity ammo, just ordinary HV. There are so many conflicting comments on the AR7, it's hard to know what to believe. I don't expect the AR7 to replace my 9422 but in the absence of any chance of hunting with a handgun in the UK
, the AR7 is the next best thing for what I need. I will use CB longs for some pest control work but I know it will only function as a single shot with those and sub sonics.
If ever I get the darn thing I will post a range report.

Re: OT - AR7
You just wrap the tape around the bottom of the magazine so it pushes the bottom of the magazine away from the receiver, that translates to a steeper feed angle at the top of the magazine. I still have one magazine that still has the tape on it after all these years, the tape will make it impossible to put the magazine in the butt stock compartment though.Ysabel Kid wrote:Scott -salvo wrote:I have an Charter Arms AR7 I bought around 1976 shoots about anything I put in it. Jay, I'm not saying that the Federal bulk packs will for sure be the answer to your problem. I'm just saying that you might be surprised at where you find the solution.

Gotta go with Salvo on this one. I have a late 70's vintage CA AR-7. It doesn't seem to be to pick with regards to function. But it does like "Hi" speed long rifles better than hyper velocity (stingers and such), with regard to accuracy. Many a jack has fallen to it. Not to mention more than a few cottontails.salvo wrote:I have an Charter Arms AR7 I bought around 1976 shoots about anything I put in it. The feed lip angle on the magazine is the trick. Re: OT - AR7
I've had a scope mounted on it before, as well as a collapsible stock. These were pretty cool, though they negated the use of the buttstock compartment. Would be better if I could ever get the darn thing to feed right!slow2run wrote:I like the AR 7 after options and accessories are added to it, like folding stock and hand guard . just do a seacrh for

I always thought I'd like to have one of those to just keep under the seat of my truck. I'd bet if you tinker with the mag feed lips you'll be able to get it running smoothly.

Re: OT - AR7
I kept one in my Jeep for years. Never had to use it for anything serious, but it sure got a work out on jacks and general plinking. I've upgraded to the ultimate Jeep gun, as I have described previously. It now rides around in my work truck. Nice and leagal all broken apart and such.TedH wrote:I always thought I'd like to have one of those to just keep under the seat of my truck. UPDATE, Finally got the Henry Survival Rifle, only to find the safety did not work, (I think it had been tinkered with when it was proofed over here)Ysabel Kid wrote:John -game keeper wrote:Jay,

Anyway it went back to the UK dealer and I had to change the details on my firearm certificate, which can take weeks, luckily the police returned my certificate in 5 days.

Today a replacement rifle came and my local dealer suggested that we take it to a nearby field and try it out. It performed without a hitch with CCI mini mags and Remington HV solids and boy does it spit 'em out fast!!
It did not however chamber any of the Hollow Point ammo we tried, which does not bother me as my 9422 has first call on my hunting ammo.
I'm quite pleased with the little rifle, it feels more solid than I thought it would and it seems well put together.
