doesn't get much more OT

Post by pokey »

but near and dear to my heart.
telephone lines, open wire circuits on 10 pin alley arms [ a real bear to work on] .
rr7's saloon pics made me think of this, maybe a slightly larger town.

never seen one with that many.....

I remember party lines.....
every time I need to use the phone...
which was not much more than once a month...
there would be two cackaling hens talking on the phone....

our phone number was 6908...

The next time you call the help desk for a "high-tech" issue, this is what your communication goes thru on it's way to India or other off shored service.

Technology is advancing so rapidly, someday you'll be able to pick up a receiver and an operator will say "number please".

I pity the fellow that had to untangle whatever popped loose after a wind storm.

:(
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Wouldn't want to be that guy. I'm not old but when I was a kid we had a party line: a regular seven digit number, but a party line nonetheless. Maybe it was just because we were po. :D

I envied the kids who had party lines and could crank their own calls, short long short, long long short, etc.
Dad was a vet. and had to have a privet line to get his calls.
Our phone number was 17.

the real big setups, like pictured are a little before my time, but "untangling" damaged phone lines
is my job. those open wires look bad, but a buried 900 pair cable, that a backhoe has had it's way
with, is just as disheartening to drive up on, as any aerial damage.

uh oh.
thb-diggingforcables.jpg
oh no.
stolen_internet_cables_vietnam.jpg
time to go to work.
ist2_5131092-telephone-cable-repair.jpg
or maybe in the air.
cable_splicing.jpg
none of these are me, but indicative of the work.
