What's not to like about a DeHaviland DH89 Dragon Rapide? Love the skirted tires.
Their Gipsy Queen inverted 6 cylinder engine was a very interesting design.

I'm going to guess that it drives a vacuum pump for flight instruments, but honestly it could be any number of air driven devices. Old airplanes have some pretty "we'll I'll be..." items on them.

Sooooo much drag!
That little prop is probably the generator. It's not uncommon on planes of the era. The low tech vacuum source then was a venturi hanging out in the breeze, and these are seen yet today.
Compared to the Beech 18 and the DC-2, the dH airliners were quite crude. Even the Ford and Stinson tri-motors look advanced in comparison. It was, though, an economical plane. I regret not taking a ride on one when I was living in the UK a few years back.

Both it and the Stinson are uncomfortably loud inside. Besides a Rapide, I'd like to fly in a DC-3 and the DC-7. While straying a bit from the original post, I'll see if there's room on Collings' B-17, which will be within driving distance of me this month.
