What's not to like about a DeHaviland DH89 Dragon Rapide? Love the skirted tires.
Their Gipsy Queen inverted 6 cylinder engine was a very interesting design.

thanks - I love art deco aircraft, but for an airliner, that must have felt like riding a box kite.

What is that small prop, left top wing, near the cabin supposed to be for? Air Speed?

Might be for an electric generator but I'm just winging it here...BlaineG wrote:What is that small prop, left top wing, near the cabin supposed to be for? Air Speed?

One of those looks like a DH 90 Dragonfly.
44-40 Winchester. Whacking varmits and putting meat on the table since 1873.

Nothing wrong with them in my eyes!Friends Call Me Ji wrote:What's not to like about a DeHaviland DH89 Dragon Rapide? Love the skirted tires.
I never realized they were an inverted design (OK, more like never researched it )! Neat!Friends Call Me Ji wrote:Their Gipsy Queen inverted 6 cylinder engine was a very interesting design.
Highlight? For me it might BE the vacation!game keeper wrote:Great video, going on vacation on one of those would be the highlight of the vacation!..

There's an 89, 2 90s IIRC and one I can't ID/haven't tried to look up yet.44-40 Willy wrote:One of those looks like a DH 90 Dragonfly.

I'm going to guess that it drives a vacuum pump for flight instruments, but honestly it could be any number of air driven devices. Old airplanes have some pretty "we'll I'll be..." items on them.BlaineG wrote:What is that small prop, left top wing, near the cabin supposed to be for? Air Speed?
Re: For the fans of inter-war commercial aviation
Sooooo much drag!Friends Call Me Ji wrote:What's not to like about a DeHaviland DH89 Dragon Rapide?
That little prop is probably the generator. It's not uncommon on planes of the era. The low tech vacuum source then was a venturi hanging out in the breeze, and these are seen yet today.
Compared to the Beech 18 and the DC-2, the dH airliners were quite crude. Even the Ford and Stinson tri-motors look advanced in comparison. It was, though, an economical plane. I regret not taking a ride on one when I was living in the UK a few years back.

Re: For the fans of inter-war commercial aviation
Both it and the Stinson are uncomfortably loud inside. Besides a Rapide, I'd like to fly in a DC-3 and the DC-7. While straying a bit from the original post, I'll see if there's room on Collings' B-17, which will be within driving distance of me this month.Friends Call Me Ji wrote:One for my bucket list is flying in an old Ford Trimotor!
