Back in the 30-30 business

Post by getitdone1 »

Recently sold my Winchester model 94 Cowboy Commemorative at auction.

Now I ask ya, how long can a guy go without a 30-30?

Just bought a Winchester model 94, 30-30 made in 1950.

Of course it's not perfect but not bad and has metal butt plate and long fore stock. Shotgun butt. Looked at older, more expensive 94's but believe one made in 1950 will take safe yet hot loads better than one made in 1920. Maybe not but it should do.

$629.99 and he waived the shipping charge. See what happens when you're nice to people? :D

Must be about the last year for the metal butt plate and long fore stock. Believe I seen one made in 1952 that did not have long fore stock--don't know about butt plate.

Now my 30-30 ammo gets chronographed! Real interested to see how fast my 125 gr Sierra bullet loads are. Guessing 2500 fps or close.

Gun's coming from Minnesota and guy there says it's -2 (3:15 PM) and 30 mph wind. Wind chill about -30. Not for me.

The metal butt plate was used into the post 64s. The long forearm ended in the mid 50s I think.

Congrats on getting a nice Mdl 94.

INTERESTING. I HAVE A COWBOY COMMEMORATIVE AND IT IS A DELIGHTFUL CARBINE. IT HAS THE BEST ' 94 TRIGGER I EVER SAW. IT SHOOTS LIKE A MILLION BUCKS OUT TO 250 YARDS OR SO, AND LOVES JUST ABOUT ANY APPROPRIATE LOAD UNDER THE 31141/311041 BULLETS. I ONCE SAW IT SHOOT A 1/4" GROUP AT 65 YARDS WHEN I WANTED TO CHECK A SIGHT SETTING;THEY WERE ALL IN ONE LITTLE HOLE.
THERE IS ALSO SOMETHING ABOUT THE MARKINGS AND NICKLING ON THAT CARBINE THAT JUST GRAB ME BY THE OL' TICKER. WOOOEEE !!!

Congrats! I do guess the days of my picking up pre-64s for $100 to $250 are long gone. Glad I got mine when I did.

Can't believe you didn't like that Cowboy Commemorative. Everyone I know loves theirs.

The long wood forend ended with the 1952 production, IIRC, the flat steel, checkered buttplate was still in use till at least 1970.

And, finally:

Terry, Griff:

Hey guys, I like'em all and I liked the Cowboy. I also liked the Browning 1886 SRC Hi-Grade I sold at the same auction.

I just like the blued ones better. The Browning was beautiful and the Cowboy was really nice--so light in weight. Over time the "shine" was just too much.

Just me but when I get over 7-8 rifles I need to unload--and try something new.

Had lots of fun with lots of guns.

Boy they want a heck of a price for old beat-up model 94 SRC's. A really nice one would cost a guy 2500 or more. Otherwise that's probably what I'd bought.

And........different strokes for different folks. :D
