can a .308 win be loaded down to the velocity of a 30-30?
Has anyone tried duplicating 30-30 ballistics in a .308 win?

If memory serves me IMR SR4759 should work and has been recommended in the past in the various Speer manuals. 25grs should, I say should essentially duplicate the 150gr .30-30 velocities. Check the latest Speer data FIRST. Do not take my word for it. The info I am providing is purely conversational. Please check the Speer manual before proceding. Thanks, 1886.http://www.chuckhawks.com/reduced_recoil_reloads.htm Look at this web page. I do not know if 4759 is still available. Check 5744 aswell.

Thanks for the info. I don't own a .308 yet.
The reason I ask is that a planned project of mine requires 30-30 ballistics, but I have no need for a 30-30 since my leverguns in .357, .44, and 45/70 cover pretty much all lever action niches. IMO, of course. A Remington pump in .308 might be in order for something a little different.

The new Marlin 308 could keep you in a lever......Jason_W wrote:Thanks for the info. I don't own a .308 yet.

True, but handloading options are more limited.BlaineG wrote:The new Marlin 308 could keep you in a lever......Jason_W wrote:Thanks for the info. I don't own a .308 yet.

Why do you think so? Well, I guess, if you need pointy bullets.....Jason_W wrote:True, but handloading options are more limited.BlaineG wrote:The new Marlin 308 could keep you in a lever......Jason_W wrote:Thanks for the info. I don't own a .308 yet.

Probably won't need 'em, but it would be nice to use them if I want to. It is an idea.BlaineG wrote:Why do you think so? I wonder what the chances of the cartridge going obsolete are?
The neat thing about a BLR, Savage 99 or Win 88 in 308, a reloader can use pointy or flat bullets, and make a 165 gr bullet do things the mx can only dream aboutBlaineG wrote: Why do you think so? Well, I guess, if you need pointy bullets.....

You might want to rethink your needs, cause the 30/30 has more energy at 100 yards than the .44Rem Mag has at the muzzel(the .357 is animic)and the 45/70 is your best bet!
you could get a lever 99 in .308Win (that would really fill the empty spot you have now).
I like every gun made just some more than others,it's a selective type thing(good luck)!
