OT--Few Pics From Today's Buffalo Shoot

Post by Sixgun »

Fellow Guncranks,
I drove 110 miles to the Mainville Buffalo Shoot today and had a blast. Those boys put on a good show for $10. In the morning we shot at the 75 yard "running buffalo" (motorized pulley system)with pistol calibered leverguns and again with big bore leverguns. After lunch was the "main event" with 4 shots each at 200, 210, 225, 250, 280, and 300 yards. They were round steel plates from 12"-18" with a separate 6" plate next to the bigger one (only at 200, 250, and 280) and if you chose the smaller one, you got an extra point. Try hitting a 6" plate with cast bullets out to 300 yards.

I used an 1886 in 45-90 and a 1892 in 44-40 for the running buffalo and my old 1893 produced 1885 Hi-Wall in 40-82 for the "Main Event. Most everybody used 1874 sidehammer Sharps, either the nice ones from Montana or quality repo's from Italy. There were a few modern Hi-Walls and everybody shoots 45-70 except Stupido (me) Some guys have enough money wrapped up in their sights alone that are easily a weeks pay.

I did so-so on the running buffalo but......drum roll please..........the old Hi-Wall really shined and those 300 grain bullets found their way to give me 32 points and the win. Yea.........the winner got a Cadillac Escalade :D ------don't believe it--you get nothin'.

There ain't nothin' like a day out with the boys doing the only thing we know how to do---lie and shoot :D ------------Sixgun

The boys standing around waiting their turn on the running buffalo. The first bank is 100 yards--second bank is 200 yards and the tree line (where the little white target is) is 300 yards.

Congratulations Sixgun,
That looks like a lot of fun. Did you have much wind to contend with? It was pretty breezy here (Centre County) yesterday. Do you have shoot all three guns? I'm not set up for BPCR but that looks like a nice alternative match for Cowboy Silhouette rifles. They say variety is the spice of life! ;-)
Hey, I just had a thought. As much as I like shooting steel, some clubs can't or won't do it. What do you think of Cowboy "three position"? :-)

PS: nice pics!

Thanks guys, there's something about shooting that nothing else can even compare to. So relaxing and exciting at the same time.

Mav,
If your from Pa. and shoot, we HAVE to somehow know each other! :D yea, that wind was a bugger--constantly changing. It was changing so much that we just shot and hoped for the best. The Good Lord has always been with me with the wind, as when its my turn to shoot, the wind stops! :D

Some clubs won't shoot steel???? They won't get my business. Its safe and fun at the same time. Must be some tarts running those clubs :D

What is nice about these "Buffalo Shoots" is that there is no real competition--its all for fun and braggin' rights. Check out their website and come on up (or down!) to the next one. http://www.mscrange.org

I have spent a lot of time in Centre Country. We HAD a cabin in the Seven Mountains and now I just camp out during deer season in the coal strippin's about 10 miles from the Snow Shoe Truck Stop. And yes, I always manage to spend a day at Grice's Gun Shop in Clearfield------------Sixgun

OK CAS, you and I are gonna settle the first week of June. :D Why do you have to "rain on my parade" by setting the boys right when I'm lying. :D

OK guys, I have to confess. I made a mistake by saying "300 yards". It should have read "300 millimeters". :D

Thanks CAS, you had better bring a Super Duty/Heavy Duty/Industrial Strength gas mask next month. I just ordered 3 cases of baked beans, mixed with brocolli, cabbage, and sprinkled with hard boiled eggs. whew-------that place is gonna stink------------------Sixgun

Awesome Shooting Sixgun,
My club does not shoot steel, but we need to work
on that.It looks like a blast.
How you guys shoot so well with those older guns
just blows my small mind.
300 yds at a 6" plate, gosh you guys would probably
whip us guys with our Match HBARS/M1A/GARRANDS.

Now thats some shooting !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really would like to start getting into those older black
powders, but I am totally new to this???????????
What would be the gun you recomend etc.?

Nice shooting sixgun! They let you compete with that funny looking swiss buttplate? The guys around here wont allow any plate with prongs that extend past the buttplate for BPCR.

Marlinman, That Swiss buttplate is an original Winchester plate. The rifle was restocked in the 1920's by a local target shooter. I bought the rifle from his grandson. Oh, this shoot is not BPCR--we just shoot at steel at different ranges for friendly competition.

Madman,
The old guns shoot just as well as the regular new guns. Very little difference except for todays benchrest rifles. The problem with the old guns is finding out what works in them and then you have to "know your rifle", as in where the points of impact are at the different ranges. Trajectory and wind also create issues but..........if you know your rifle--its a piece of cake to drill a beer can at 300 meters :D -------------Sixgun

Sixgun,
We've crossed paths, but I don't think we've been properly introduced. ;-) We do have a mutual acquaintance in Mr. Kort.
I checked their website, it looks like less than two hours for me. I may have to give that a try.
I don't get over to the Seven Mountains too much. Although I may be heading over to Penn's Creek soon for some fishing. I usually hunt west of there in Rothrock State Forest.
I work and shoot with a bunch of guys from Clarence. I guess your camping somewhere off of the "ridge road". Nice country and good people on the mountaintop.

Looks like a whole lot of fun. Sounds a lot like the silhouette shoot I attended up at Tonasket with Wind. I just wish I had a range closer and more time.

Enjoyed the photos and the report. Looks like a good event for my Springfield 1888.
