Crescent shaped butt plate

I have a Winchester M94AE. I would like to add a crescent shaped butt plate to the stock. Is this plausible? I have the skill to do the wood work. Blued steel is preferred.

I can't remember which stock fit the newer 94's, but these should fit up to the 80's for sure.

They even have the buttplate and they're reasonable. Might poll what experience the forum has with them re their quality and fit first. I don't have any information on that.

I can't tell you how or where about buttplates, but I can tell you that I find crescent buttplates to be mighty uncomfortable to shoot.

John Killebrew had a Model 1873 in .45 Long Colt with a brass crescent buttplate. Jimmy Pilcher and I both christened it the Pitchfork Rifle because with John's heavy loads, the buttplate would stab us like a Pitchfork. John liked it though.

Be sure the buttplate fits your shoulder and that you know the proper way to hold a rifle equipped with a crescent buttplate. Good Luck!

There's your problem Doc. A crescent butt plate is meant to be cradled on the upper-arm not the shoulder.

Must have been SOME heavy loads in that '73, Doc...

My load throws 250 gr. LaserCast slugs at 1400 fps from my 24 1/4" '73, and it is not at all brutal -- not even uncomfortable -- just a rewarding buck & snort, and a very accurate combination to boot. Anything much heavier than that load is a real danger to the lockup in a '73, believe me.

Yes, you CAN load somewhat heavier than that, but only to the detriment of a fine rifle.

If you have inletting skills it may be some work, but it can be done. What you will run into is the difference in width and length between the plate and stock. It may require filing down the plate or narrowing the stock itself. Blank (in the white) crescent plates are available new or you can use an original. Originals will be pricey though.

Contact Midwest Gunworks and se if they have any more of USRA's left over stocks from the plant closing in 2006. They hada few as I bid on some, but was a little too cheap. No inleting required. May be al gone, but worth a phone call.

I got a stock and buttplate (was precision brand IIRC) from Brownells. The stock was inlet on the front end for a pre-64 win 94. It was fit to a 1970 receiver - and for me, this was a booger - but I'm not a skilled woodworker. But I made it work anyway... the butt was almost spot on and only required a bit of fitting. The buttplate was in the white and needed to be finished - had the mould lines still on it, so I ground them off and sanded the whole thing, blued and drilled the mounting holes. Here's a few pics:

As you can see, the stock to receiver area gave me fits - but Its rock solid now and looks good to me. Before the bedding, the stock had a bit of "play" in the wrist to reciever - the stock bedding compound eliminated that and actually improved the accuracy of the rifle.

Hi Jake,
you do know, the carbine stocks are shorter but fatter at the plate than the rifle stocks. So if you cut in a cresent plate you will need to remove wood from the sides and metal from the new plate because it will be proud over the shorter wood.

And easier project would be to use a Rossi Rifle stock with the plate already on it and inlett it to the 94. Up until WWII the 92's and 94's used the same wood so it's pretty close. Here's a 92 carbine with a cresent rifle stock.
