Musings about 'families' of cartridges

Post by AJMD429 »

I have always been fascinated (obsessed? ) with series of same-caliber cartridges, especially those based on the same case. Like the .38 Special and .357 Magnum, but preferably ones where the power difference can be even more substantial.

The reason? I always thought it would be nice to have the hypothetical ultimate 'combo' of
- a long-action 'rifle'
- a short-action 'carbine'
- a single action 'hunting' revolver
- a double action 'protection' revolver

One of the 'glitches' in the little game is the fact that some of my favorite chamberings don't share cases or even bullet diameters - you can't just stock a ".45 cal" bullet if you have a .45 Colt and a .45-70! (I know, stock both, and you really need different types of bullets anyway, and all that...)

For the 'really big' or even bottleneck round, I just picked some interesting ones; nostalgia or popularity not really a factor.

Anyway, in case the weather is bad where you are, and there aren't any other threads to while away your time, here's some 'families' of cartridges I churned up:

.312" one case series case length 'typical' load (yeah I know some of these are WAY off  )
.32 H&R Mag 1.075" - 85 gr @ 1100 fps from 6"
.327 Federal Mag 1.200" - 100 gr @ 1400 fps from 3"
others
.32-20 1.315" - 100 gr @ 2100 fps from 22"

.358" one case series
.357 Magnum 1.290" - 158 gr @ 1235 fps from 6"
.357 Maximum 1.605" - 158 gr @ 1825 fps from 12"
others
.35 Remington 1.920" - 200 gr @ 2080 fps from 22"
.358 Winchester 2.015" - 200 gr @ 2490 fps from 22"
.35 Whelen 2.494" - 220 gr @ 2660 fps from 24"

.375" one case series
.375 Atomic 1.400" - 220 gr @ 1700 fps from 10"
.375 Winchester 2.020" - 220 gr @ 2300 fps from 24"
others
.375 Ruger 2.580" - 270 gr @ 2840 fps from 24"

.410" one case series
10mm Rimmed Mag 1.300" - 180 gr @ 1485 fps from 12"
.40 Maximum 1.605" - 200 gr @ 2100 fps from 10"
or
.41 Magnum 1.290" - 170 gr @ 1420 fps from 10"
.414 Super Mag 1.610" - 210 gr @ 1500 fps from 10"
others (.411 - sorry)
.405 Winchester 2.580" - 350 gr @ 2130 fps from 24"

.430" one case series
.44 Mag 1.285" - 240 gr @ 1700 from 20"
.445 Supermag 1.600" - 300 gr @ 2100 from 14"
others
.444 Marlin 2.225" - 240 gr @ 2350 from 22"

.452" one case series
.45 Colt 1.285“ - 225 gr @ 960 fps from 7"
.454 Casull 1.385“ - 260 gr @ 1700 fps from 7"
.460 S&W 1.790“ - 300 gr @ 2000 fps from 10"
others
.452 JBX (45-70) 2.105 - 240 gr @ 2375 fps from 12"

.475" one case series
.480 Ruger 1.285 - 325 gr @ 1300 fps from 7"
.475 Linebaugh 1.500 - 420 gr @ 1360 fps from 7"
others
.470 Accurate Rel 2.55" - 500 gr @ 2400 fps from 23"

.500" one case series
.50 Action Express 1.285" - 300 gr @ 1380 fps from 6"
.500 S&W 1.625" - 325 gr @ 2393 fps from 22"
others
.50 B&M Alaskan 2.100" - 500 gr @ 1875 fps from 18"

It looks like you could make some fun four-gun 'combos' (where's YK 8) ) using these in various actions...

For Christmas, I want a lever action rifle in .452 JBX (a .452'd .45-70), a lever action carbine in .460 S&W, a big SA revolver in .454 Casull, and a derringer in .45 Colt...

The whole 'series' thing of same-case-in-different-caliber stuff is yet another thing I sometimes obsess over.

Only finances and a wife who'd kill me prevent me from getting a barrel for my Encore in all the '30-06' series - .25-06, .270 Win, .280 Rem, .30-06, .35 Whelen - that would be so totally COOL 8) . . . but so totally useless  . . . Oh well, I do have the .270 and .280 and haven't felt too guilty - besides, they're more different than the one digit - one's a Winchester and one's a Remington!

4 gun combo?!? AJ, you're going to get me in trouble for sure!

How about .38 Short Colt to .38 Long Colt to .38 Special to .357 Magnum to .357 Maximum?

.44 Colt to .44 Russian to .44 Special to .44 Magnum to .444 Marlin?

Possibilities are endless...

256 Winchester Magnum ;)
38 special
357 Magnum
360 Dan Wesson
357 Maximum

Hey, don't feel bad - I've been musing what levergun I could safely barrel/chamber for the .375 Ruger !

I'm thinking it will most likely have to be a BLR...............and call it the "BLR Safari".

Now if we can just get the gun companies to make them for us...!

Maybe Ruger could make the SP101 and Blackhawk components, and Marlin the lever carbine, and Browning or Savage the lever rifle...

Sure it won't happen, but is makes for fun stuff to 'muse' about... 8)
