anyone who has to use a gun to stop a criminal, and gets sued, should counter-sue the parents for raising a criminal. the flip of the parents being charged for the actions of their childrens . . .

A judge with common sense will throw out this case , but they are few and far between.

To carry a gun without a legal defense plan is extremely reckless. I agree that we are not the problem, it is lawless individual content to prey on whoever is available. However, you can never dismiss a bleeding heart judge or jury that finds you criminally or civilly liable. The best case scenario is you are no billed/exonerated/found innocent, but as we have seen civil courts are not respecting findings of criminal courts. You could lose everything you have worked for and even have serious relationship issues in the aftermath of the shooting. I actually bought a slingshot years ago after there was a post regarding a man that had mastered the slingshot. Guess I better retire it!

Indiana got a law passed that if you use a gun in self-defense and are vindicated by the courts as having done so, that you are not allowed to be sued by the person you shot.
Look up attorney Guy Relford, a.k.a. “The Gun Guy”. He has a website for his law office and a show on WIBC radio. It might be worth emulating in your state if you can get a legislator or advocate to sponsor a similar law.
The impetus in Indiana was a woman who was a concealed carrier, and intervened to save the life of a law enforcement officer who is being attacked, and had been disarmed by the criminal. The criminals family sued her, even though she was clearly intervening to save a life. Relford is a pro gun attorney and took out the cars, ultimately getting legislation passed to assure that that that thing would never happen again.

As a retired Federal/state agent and US Army officer: have a plan.
The CCW folks that advertise are correct in 48 out of 50 states. Beware of large cities with histories of modern violence related to drugs, gangs, and stolen guns.
Castle doctrine only works in states that support it by law. Have a carry permit where required.
Sooner or later one may find themselves in a self-defense situation. Persons with LENF background may be held to a higher standard.
BUT, its your life or loved one...so do the common sense drill double tap or comparable immediate action. Bad guys don't rehearse a plan and may be high on drugs and dumned down stupidity.
Be prepared.

Just make sure the defense works the first time with a double tap.

The perp says he was just trying to play with the little girl? Sounds as if he was attempting rape.

Shoot to stop the attack, then stop. Make sure that the perp cannot continue the attack.
Check six for accomplices.
Remember that it's WAAY harder for a dead guy to sue you than it
is for someone you've maimed.
Make sure you're legal to carry in whatever jurisdiction you're in.
OTOH, if you've just stopped some sort of mass shooting, for instance, you're very
unlikely to be prosecuted.
If you're a woman and you shoot or kill a much larger adversary, you're more
likely to walk away with no charges, especially if that adversary is unknown to
you.
But there are no guarantees. No such thing as legal bedrock.
You can only improve the odds.

Re: Afraid you’ll get sued if you use a gun in self defense…?
Frankly, if it comes down to needing a firearm for self defense, the last thing I'll be worrying about is getting sued. Lawyers, snakes that they are (and I'll hire the biggest snake I can), can handle what comes next.
Here's one for you from a retired lawyer. If he were suing a person who had some sort of insurance plan to pay for a defensive shooting, he'd use that to prove the shooter was "just looking for a chance to shoot someone". Like all things in life it's a double edged sword. Come to think of it, if you used a double edged sword, some lawyer would probably say using two edges instead of one proves you wanted to kill someone.

Re: Afraid you’ll get sued if you use a gun in self defense…?
I am head of our church security team, excuse me, we are supposed to call it the Safety Team. Anyway, several of us have purchased our own USCCA insurance, because even if you are dead to rights in the right and justified in using lethal force, you're going to get sued by someone. You may not get charges filed against you, but someone is going to sue you more often than not. And the church is not gong to bale you out, you're on your own. It's been proven in past incidents, some well-known. One church shooting that was all over the news at the time, in Texas, I think, where the prep shot and killed a couple of church members, before a retired or maybe it was off duty police officer, took the perp out, got sued by a fellow church member for mental anguish, because they were close to the location of the shooting and they were traumatized.
The thing is, the perp was dead, who's still standing to sue? Yep, it's the good guy, because he's still alive and may have some money or assets to be relieved of. The fellow church member who sued, may have very well had his life saved that day by the good guy, but that doesn't matter, He's traumatized and someone should pay.
I was shocked when I learned of this. Makes me think that only people with little means to pay if sued should be on safety teams. It's hard to get money out of a turnup, but if you have money and land and assets, then you are a target to be sued. Therefore, you probably need insurance.
