348 Winchester reloaders here?

Post by big bear »

Any 348 Winchester reloaders here?
Do you anneal your brass?
If yes, do you use a store bought annealing system? (I am thinking of buying an AMP annealer for my long range rifle Lapua brass and for my 348Win brass.)

Experience with Starline 348Win brass.

Thanks for any feedback.

I handloaded for my Model 71 years ago. I never annealed the brass and had no issues with them splitting. I loaded the Hornady 200 gr. bullet and the Barnes 250 gr. bullet. This was long before the FTX bullet that Hornady puts out now. I mostly loaded the Hornady bullet in those days.

I anneal but use a propane torch. I do it in low light so I can see the case begin to go orange then drop into a coffee can of water.
I mostly do my 218,25-20,257 AI. Mostly because of poor availability for those.

Thank you gentlemen for your replies. Afraid your votes match my predicament , 1 yes/1 no vote. I am hoping a tie breaker shows up :?

I used to anneal my .30-30's. I did it the same way Gunny does his. Brass is so plentiful and I have so much of it that I just don't worry about it anymore.

Don't have a 348W, but I anneal my 30-30, 270Win, 30-06 brass identically the same as Gunny. I put each case into a small socket on an extension, very slow spin with a drill.

As we know, brass work hardens. That being said I'd say fresh brass up to about 5 reloads shouldn't need to be annealed. Then maybe do it every 5-10 firings.
It is certainly a good thing for the guy that shoots the hard to find calibers.
Certainly a good thing for all calibers if you want to take the time.
Thing that gets me is having to then wait for the cases to dry!

I had a Browning 71 and used winchester brass exclusively. I annealed it when new then after 5-6 loadings using the torch and water drop method. Starline wasn't available then an I have no experience with it in 348.

All ive used in 30-30, 95% anyways is Older Rem & Win Brass, and don't really want anything else. Most of it been fired 5-8 times. Ive recently went to Starline for 30-06 & 270, and im no expert, but imo its best brass made, compared to plenty Rem & Win in these cartridges! No complaints for them, but any new brass i buy, will continue to be only Starline for all these cartridges! Have no reason to doubt their 348win brass is superb!
