Whatdzit?

Post by AmBraCol »

While digging around looking for something, this surfaced. I received it as a gift back in the 20th Century down in the Amazon Basin. I got to thinkin' that perhaps it might be of interest to some of y'all. Particularly, that second notch from the hilt. The one near the hilt is of course a bottle cap opener. What about the next one? Does it perhaps ring a bell with any of y'all?

Could it be to use as a draw knife? I'm thinking to make uniform staves for fish traps or similar, just a guess.

Here's a look at the other side, if that helps any. That notch is very task specific.

I'm stumped. I found other Tram knives with the narrow notch and bottle opener but not the wide notch.

Is it beverage specific? Seems heavy on those features, would be quite a party implement. 8)

Since the notch is dovetailed, if the points were sharp, it could be a rudimentary saw. I imagine a woodsman running that notch over a 1 or 2 inch branch back and forth. This would work if the notch was squared also. The corners just have to be sharp. But then the bottle opener and cork screw indicates this to be caried by someone prepared to party. Is there some can of some food that that notch would grab and help open? Perhaps a canning lid. The strait notch might work for straitening the lid for reuse.

It is used to pull stuck shotgun shells out of dirty chambers.

Ding, ding, ding! In the detail below you can see "20" right above the duck's head. This is a stuck shell puller for a 20 gauge shotgun. The break open single shot was the ubiquitous replacement for the muzzle loader in the Amazon basin back in the 20th Century. I never owned a 20 bore myself, but this was gifted to me. Perhaps it's time to remedy the lack of an appropriate launching platform. Anyway, not just dirty chambers (a HUGE issue with the amazonian belief in "veneno" - poison - as the active ingredient in a shotgun's lethality), the old paper hulls tended to absorb moisture and swell, causing a big problem when attempting to extract the shell. The old singleshots would cam the shell partially out, but then there still wasn't enough to grip and finish removing them. Slide this handy dandy cutout over the shell and pull. Maybe enlist a buddy to pull on the other end. I've seen these for the 20, 28, 32 and 36 (410) gauges, but this one for the 20 is the only one I've ever owned.Funny as at one time or another I've had one of the other gauges in the battery, but never had one of the shell pullers for them.

It sure does look like a shot shell rim now that I see it like that. Can you put a hull in it for us? What of the slit notch?

Don't have access to any 20 bore ammo here, more's the pity. I was never really clear what that slit notch was for. I can imagine a number of uses for it, but don't know for sure what the original intent was. One could, for example, use it to bend a tin can to give it a pour spout. But again, that's just creative thinking, not really fact based as I've no idea what the manufacturer intended it to be used for.
