I really had to think on this. Would I keep modern or old vintage; made an in between compromise and would go with a 1957 Savage Model 99F featherweight in .308 Win and a 1948 Colt Government Model .45ACP.

Re: NRA Article "The Little Savage: .250-3000"

The .250-3000 Savage is a great cartridge. Savage actually introduced the .250-3000 Savage in 1914 in the Model "1899 250-3000"(the article is in error on the year and model). This was a Deluxe takedown with nicely checkered walnut, perch-belly stock, pistol grip, schnabel-tipped forearm, ...

Scabbard Maker? No marking

A couple years ago a bought a very nice Savage Model 99T chambered in .250-3000 Savage. It came with this beautiful unmarked scabbard. I was wondering if there are any scabbard experts here that may have some idea who may have made it.

That will make a great deer rifle. The 300 is a pleasure to fire with considerably less recoil than a .308 and deer don’t know the difference. Easy to load to 2550-2600fps with 150s and get 1.5” or less groups. You will really like it.

Very nice; what a great present1 Love the pre-60 99s. Yes, it dates to 1950 and it is a Model 99EG. The rifling for pre-60 Savage 99 250-3000s was only 1:14, which won't stabize longer .257 bullets. Have you considered picking up a cheap used 870 barrel and cut it down to the shortest legal length and try the agilla shells in it? Have her try the shells first, then if they work, consider the shorter barrel.

Re: Savage 1899 .38-55 Takedown

This is a real gem and a family heriloom; and to have one in a takedown is really terrific. Doug Murray's book on the Savage levers show that takedown became available on the 1899-A in 1909; but takedowns have been seen in the 70K SN range, which would be more like 1907-8. An octagon-barreled 1899 i...

Yes headspaces on the rim like when firing regular 3" .410 shells. Yes the case is that tough resulting in the hour-glass shape. Here is a pic of a fired 3" .410 shell next to a new and a fire-formed 9.3x74R, so you can see the length comparison. http://i798.photobucket.com/albums/yy263/Ke...

Pete, I agree with you. Great little, well-balanced rifles. I have a 1899H in .30-30' too. Really like both of them. Years ago my father-in-law gave me a really nice Browning Safari II; I much prefer taking the 99F to the stand .. just like the way it handles and the nostalgia that goes along with it.

The serial number is way too high for a 99T. I don't have my reference books with me, but from memory the 99T serial numbers were from about 350,000 to 400,000. The 99T was never chambered in .308 (discontinued many years before the .308 appeared). My guess would be you have a Model 99F with a 22&qu...

The 99A in .308 is only slightly heavier than a 94 30-30. A tiny bit of added weight yields dramatically increased down range performance. Savage made several lightweight models. The 1899H 30-30 with 20" barrel is a couple ounces over 6lbs; the early 99F .303 (1920) is also in that range, the ...

Far as I can tell from my Murray book there would have been only two models with 20" barrels in 1914 - the 1899F and the 1899H. The F was listed at 7.25lb and the H at 6lbs (with a lightweight, rapid taper barrel).

What is the serial number; at least the first 4 digits.
