358 Winchester & 180 gr. Speer

Post by Mainehunter »

I'm planing on using my Savage 99F 358 Win. for the up coming deer season and I have a box of 180 grain Speer flat point I would like to try out. I've already checked out various loading manuals on powders to use BUT would like know if anyone here has a pet load to share. Thanks!

3031 would not be a bad place to start.

.358?mmm....

I also have a Savage 99 in .358.but I have no idea what letter comes after the '99 Savage. I "think" it's the one called "99 .358. It's a safe queen in the back of the safe. The gun is like new so I seldom shoot it, you know, investment piece.

Just looked at my sparse notes on this rifle and here it is

Factory Winchester 200 gr. Silvertip. 2439 fps

46 grains IMR 4064 200 gr. Hornady R.N 2341 fps. (Necked up military cases)

25 gr. A.A. 5744 250 gr. Lyman gas check (designed for the .35 Winchester) 1738 fps.

No notes on how accurate it is and when I write nothing, it usually means it's OK and I'm not interested in pursuing additional data.------6

Well, I dug it out and don't see any "letter" on it. I hear these things are going for 15-18. Someone comes up 14 they can take it home. Too pretty to shoot or hunt with.

My BLR likes 47.2 3031 under that bullet. Likes the 200 better and the 220s best. My bolt does not care for the 180s much.
Kind regards,

I know your question was about the 180gr bullets, but the truth is that I don't use them, and prefer the heavier bullets in the .358.

I have a re-barreled Savage Model 10 with a 22" barrel.

My favorite loads are the Speer 220gr FNSP (51.6gr Win748, 2434fps, 0.75" at 100yds) and the Hornady 250gr RN (46.6gr Win748, 2212fps, 1" at 100yds).

In my rimmed version of the 358, I shoot the 180 gr. Speer with 43.0 gr. of H4198. My 336ER will put the first 3 shots inside 1 moa with that load, at 2607 fps. That's my favorite whitetail load.

I don't hunt whitetails anymore. Not enough meat. I prefer to hunt hogs.

So with the .356Win (In my 336ER) I again go with the heavier 220gr Speer FNSP, 47.1gr Win748, 2304fps, 1" at 100yds.

I just like heavy bullets, I guess.

Thanks for the replies! :D Most of the powders that have been mentioned I have in stock.

Hey Six.... Nice looking Savage you got there! Reminds me of the one I had in 375 Win. That was a series A model. Yeah I'm noticing for awhile now the 99's in 358, 375, 7mm-08 to name a few are really getting up there in price. There's a guy at the gun club has been looking for one of those for awhile now. I'll pass the info to him and see if he bites.

I was looking at .358 bullets the other day at Midway and was surprised that only Woodleigh makes a 250-grain RN in this caliber. If I can't get to the bottom of the fouled barrel in my Remington Lee 1899 Sporting Rifle in .30-30, I was thinking of having it rebored to .35 Winchester -- one of the original chamberings for the 1899. Of course, plenty of fine 200-grain RNs to choose from.

I thought the 180 Speers were developed for 35 Remington use. If that is so, won't you be seriously overdriving them in a 358? :?:

I'm not going to drive them too fast, like to stay around 2600 f.p.s. The Speer 180 is a tough bullet! I've read countless reports about the penetration is extremely good, better than some of the 200 or 220 grain on the market. I know someone personally who is a guide in Alaska uses these bullets in her 35 Whelen. She has done quite a bit of testing on this bullet her self and uses it exclusively on critters that don't bite back if you know what I mean.
