Thanks for the info Sixgun. That works good! Now - The Lyman semi-wadcutter 225 grain is not working out so good. Some cartridges load fine yet on others I cannot close the lever. If I try to force the bullet in/lever closed it will sometimes eject an empty case while leaving the bullet stuck in the...

This is the 8th year of this tradition. If you are alone for the holidays, you are invited to come to Texas to spend Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years with my family, friends and I. Arrive the day before and depart at your leisure the day or two after. I will provide a private room and bath. You ...

First hunt with .358-30/30 w/ deer
So this morning I sat in a tower blind overlooking a natural pasture where the wooded edge of the creek borders our property. This spot had some bucks on camera photos in the evening but there has not been any in a few weeks and never in the morning, so I was not totally enthused but was working wit...

Two in particular: A Savage 99 in 308 that my uncle gave me when I was a kid. He never used it and so I somehow thought it was a second-rate rifle or cartridge. 20 years later it bothered me. Re: 35-30/30 update
I just like 35's. I have two 35 Rems, a Whelen, a 356 Win (borrowed), a 360 DW. I also have a 30-30 Win. So, since I have powder and bullets that will work in all the .358 cartridges I figured the .358-30/30 was a way to enjoy the rifle while consolidating components. I am very familiar with the bal...

Re: 35-30/30 update
Yeah, JES did the work for me. I chose 3 groove after several considerations. It will shoot ok with 357 diameter pistol bullets that are 160 gr or more and it works great with 200 gr+ jacketed bullets. Any oversized cast bullet will do. The only bullets that it is weak with are 150 and 180 grain jac...

35-30/30 update
So, some of you know my Henry was converted to .358-30/30. The first process was to form brass. The two die Redding set is difficult to form cases from without crushing 3 or 4 out of 10. Fire-forming works well. I used 6 grains of Titegroup with a sheet of toilet paper and a wax plug. This forms the...

Well I had W296 that I used a lot in one caliber. I know the velocity with each bullet very well. I used H110 and got a somewhat different point of impact. I checked the velocity and it was 100 fps and change LESS with the same load. Now, I will say my 296 was a few years old and the 110 I tried was...

Re: Real world advantages of scope features?
The reason why scopes intended for short range use are often equipped with parallax compensation is that at short range (and at high magnification) parallax errors become more noticeable. A typical scope objective has a focal length of 100 mm. An optical ideal 10× scope in this example has been perf...

I have the 4X rimfire that I bought used at a gun show and a 2X7X28 rimfire that I purchased new. Both are extremely bright. When we shoot rabbits it is like getting an extra 10-12 minutes of shooting time which makes a big difference when the rabbits come out. They are crystal clear and sighted in ...

I'll likely shoot a number of deer. As long as I have people who want or need the meat and landowners that are shooting does or culls for QDM I don't mind shooting a few. I want to use my Henry caliber 35-30 on my own property. I also want to use a Win 94 in caliber 307 Win in the woods. For some ra...

I make that decison based on the primary game and average distance. The bigger the target area appears in the scope, the easier it is to be precise. Some examples: 1) My neighbor and I have dedicated rabbit shooting rifles and we shoot a lot of rabbits. We live in a rural area but within a sort of s...

Well, if you want to be traditional you may need a quenching solution like I learned in England while studying to be a Gunmaker. Urinate in a metal jar and put the lid on it for about a month. Great for hardening and tempering. You probably want some tongs to get your parts out of it.

OK so this is presumptuous and ficticious, but ...if you were going to use a rifle or carbine to knock over plates, shoot targets, small game and game up to average whitetail deer, which would you rather have - but more importantly - why? a 35 caliber 160 grains @ 1800 fps or a 45 caliber 320 grains...

I have seen a Ruger Hawkeye do the same thing yours did if you feed the first round directly into the chamber. Fill the mag, close the bolt to drive one into the chamber and it works like it should. Give it a try.

Shoot twice as far in front of them as you think you need to. You'll be surprised! Also, on a crossing shot you can try swinging the gun through the bird and then just as it gets in front of the bird pivot your hips in the same direction, thereby pulling your entire torso forward. Pass bird with bar...

I learned to build and fix doubles (SxS). Mechanically, they are different animals than O/U's. There are many variations of O/U mechanisms. Got $45 on the ammo now. The auction bid does not include the cost of shipping it to you.
You can PM or post if you'd like something. Either one will do. Think of this more as a garage sale with proceeds going to the website than a true auction.
