Re: Lathes and 'Mini-mills'...???
I've had a 12x36: Grizzly lathe for 23 years to satisfy my gunsmithing needs. I also use a mill attachment on it for making small parts , cutting sight dovetail. It has about same travel as small mini mill. I run small endmills and flycutters in collet out of the lathe spindle bore. To pull off anyt...

Re: Double checking. Can .22 WRF be safely fired in a .22 Magnum?
For a long time WRF was expensive to shoot . Now .22 WMR is that way . Good news is I saw WMR as cheap as $16 last month. CCI JHP is wonderful in the 1890 or Remington model 12 WRF rifles. I probably would not shoot it in any handgun per their warnings. But as stated Winchester lubaloy copper plated...

I have shot WRF in my 883 Marlin but they will not feed from mag tube. Original .22 WRF specs .226" grooves with .219" bore CCI WRF are jacketed and true WRF at. 2265" Winchester lubaloy are copper plated lead. They are .2245"-.225" If those remember my Colt .22 WRF Police P...

Re: Why did the 1894 happen and NOT a 1892/1886 Mid Size
Never owned an 1886 or 1893 Marlin but I always considered the 1892 and 1894 easy to disassemble and reassemble. The 1894 encompasses the same old time features as far as safety and sear catch , hammer , mainspring as earlier 1873 and 1876 rifles. Removable tang. About only thing in an 1894 that can...

The 1894 happened because they wanted a lightweight rifle with a more powerful cartridge than the 1892.

Re: German MG-42 - interesting gun development
The MG42 came out to replace the very labor intensive MG34. A much simpler design using stamped sheet metal for the receiver and FCG. Easy to maintain , quick barrel changes, high rate of fire but yet capable of rate reducing enhancements. With heavier bolt carrier group. The barrel houses an extens...

Re: The gun Ruger never made.
The interesting part is not all turned maroon . And sometimes it was only certain parts like loading gates . It's definatly a product of investment casting. Alloy may contribute too but look at the old Savage frames when reblued they are deep maroon if dip blued.

Re: The gun Ruger never made.
Those maroon frames were the product of 4140 casting reaction . Lot of guns left the factory that way . So many Ruger released a statement saying this and they would attempt to refinish if desired but no guarantee.

Re: Browning 53 FRONT SIGHT AFFIXED
Typically ramps were silver brazed when it's in the white.
The braze is usually hidden under the sight .
Early on pre war Winchesters the ramp was part of the barrel forging. But later it changed to silver braze. One would assume Browning used the later method.

Jim, The 1892 and 1894 have been my main interest and where I've spent most of my time . Great rifles/carbines .
Both share a lot of same parts like sights, stocks , bands, buttplates.
Glad to share anything I've learned about them .

Not real common, in that configuration . The Whelen fluted comb shotgun butt carbines are more common. Buttplate is shorter and has no spur. These are often encountered with half mags and Eastern style no ring. Post WW1 - 1930 ish.

Pre war ramps were part of the barrel forging just like on the 1894 and 1892. My 1948 ramp is still forged as part of barrel.

The transition started with the Whelen fluted comb shotgun stocks. Both 94 and 92. They still had post front sight and sometimes saddlerings. Eastern carbines lot of times still had SRC buttplate which was seen into mid to late 30's . The final prewar carbine had the serrated model 55 steel shotgun ...

Sounds like your apply force to get it to close which can ruin headspace gauge .Be careful.
