Re: Washington Deer Hunting Trip (Pics)
Beautiful country and photos. Sounds like you still had a good time. Yes. I was wet, but warm, saw some wildlife, and had the satisfaction that I got within range, and if getting a buck had been my highest priority, I could have done it. If I can figure out how to get better pictures with my camera...

Re: Loose Dogs
I've had two experiences as a dog owner that necessitated me to eliminate my own dogs. One time we had a stray that wandered in and the kids liked him, so we kept him. The neighbor up the hill came down to the house one day and said we had a problem. My dog took to going on his porch and drug off hi...

This is the sight picture from one of my guns. Too bad that the front sight won't show up in the photo, but you get the drift. Attachment: Mike, That looks similar to the setup I have on my 45-90. That's why I asked about peep sights. Mine doesn't have an aperture, and it seemed that it would have ...

Re: Hunting with an 1886 Winchester
The semi-buckhorn sights seemed to help home in on that deer. I swept the front sight past it, aiming about 3' ahead of it and dropped it with one shot. I tried to do that with this buck. They went behind a couple of 3-4 foot fir trees and I was set for them to come out the other side. While behind...

Hunting with an 1886 Winchester
While hunting with my 40-82, I missed an opportunity at a buck that was trotting through heavy timber. This was old growth where the smaller dominant trees were 2-3 feet in diameter, so it was easy for him to get lost in the trees. I didn't take the shot because it would have been too far back. A fe...

I headed to the woods the last couple of days to see if I could bag a blacktail buck. I left my scoped BLR at home and carried my 40-82. One of the local hardware stores has CCI small pistol primers. They limit you to 400 at a time at 4.95 per 100. Last weekend, Cabelas had some in Olympia for around $33 per 1000. For the last couple of months I have been seeing small pistol and small rifle locally.

Re: Deer hunting decision/opinions.
Take them all ao you can change from day to day based on where you are going to hunt. If you are going to hunt the field side where shots could be long, use the 300. If you are going to hunt the woods, chances are you will be shooting under 100 yards, so either the 30-30 or 38-55 would be plenty of ...

Thought you might get smile out of this one. This could be considered political, if so, go ahead and move it, but I thought it was pretty humorous. Old Butch John was in the fertilized egg business. One of the worst shots I ever made was on my first bull elk at 15 feet. I was using my BLR in 308. I was in a white fir thicket where 10" of fresh snow limited visibility because of the snow laden branches. I caught a flash of movement in front of me and realized it was a horn moving back and f...

A 30-30 is pretty hard to beat for effectiveness on most game animals and has a fairly light recoil. My 94 in 30-30 doesn't have near the felt recoil of my M92 in 44 mag. As others have said, a lot depends on what she wants to hunt, but a 30-30 fills the bill pretty well in North America. IMHO

The 86's in 40-70 had a faster rifling twist rate than the 40-82's 1:28, so they could handle heavier bullets than the Express calibers (40-82 and 45-90). The 40-82 can be fired in a 40-70, but not the other way around because the 40-82 rifling won't stabilize the larger bullets loaded in the 40-70....

From what I have seen here locally, that is a fair price. I recently picked up a pre 64 for $300. It was cosmetically challenged, but turned out to be a good shooter. The few post 64s that I have seen here that were in good condition ranged from 325 to 375. If the bore is good, I'd say go for it. :w...
