As you all know, I had back surgery a couple weeks ago. Decided that if I have to be stuck in bed, the best pick-me-up is watching some good movies (which, IIRC, many of you recommended). I'm certainly not going to watch the news - that would make me suicidal!
Anyway, last week I watched 18 episodes of "Wanted: Dead or Alive", a couple-few a day. Right now I'm watching "Bandolero!". I know, not the best westerns, but I hadn't seen (or can't remember) many of the WDoA episodes, and watching Rachel Welch would brighten anyone's day!
Kid, see if someone can find "Matewan" for you. Not a western, but a story about the troubles in the West Virginia coal fields in the early 20's. Heck of a gun fight at the end. And there's Sid Hatfield, Matewan's police chief - a good guy subsequently murdered by Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency goons. A good library may have it. Speedy "Back on your feet!"

I always thought "The Quiet man" was entertaining with a lot of comic relief.
I also just downloaded a book by Robert Fulghum this morning on itunes to listen to later. Something about his voice is relaxing and humorous to me.
Have your wife visit the local library and view the books on tape ( or CD) that way you can stay on your back and listen to what is being read. Tom Bodett is good as well as Garison Keeler. All three are good story tellers. I listened to a book a few years ago about trout fishing called "A River Home" that was so good it made me want to give it a try some time, which I have.

Dick Estelle is also good - I swear he could read the phone book and make it entertaining. He even reads stories about rural people, people who hunt, people who own guns, and stuff like that on NPR and gets away with it...! He's just that good...

Kid, I go with Hobbie on the John Wayne movies, got most of them in my collection. Another series I dont know if it has appeared in the States is Tales of Wells Fargo. That was a great show. Have been unable to source them on DVD though, if anyone has let me know. The Jimmy Stewart movies are good value too, especially Shenandoah. Hey - get well soon fellah.
"Once Upon A Time in the West." Vintage Charles Bronson. Henry Fonda is excellent as the killer Frank, and Jason Robards as Cheyenne.
Can't beat "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly." See if you can spot the Remington Revolving Carbine shown in just one scene. Or, grab "The Outlaw Josey Wales." Recoveries were made for Clint Eastwood flicks.
How about another grand spaghetti western with "The Wild Bunch." Interesting transitional time in history and an interesting story.
"Open Range" has an ending that makes it worthwhile. "Appalossa" is better than it was treated at the box office. Too bad too, as some follow-up novels involving these characters would make good movies.
"The Long Riders" is a decent flick with some innovative (for the time) filming.
Finally, I would recomment two WWII movies. "The Big Red 1" with Lee Marvin is superb. And there is one other very little known flick called "A Midnight Clear." This last one is set towards the end of World War II and you can even tell your wife it is a Christmas movie. (And then get ready to apologize.)

Flame over India, The Guns of Navarone, Bridge on the River Kwai, The Four Feathers 1939, Gunga Din, A Bridge to Far, Battle of Britain, Bootleggers 1974 with Slim Pickens and Jaclyn Smith in an early role.
We just watched "Dave Barry's Complete Guide to Guys" and it was hilarious; one to watch with the spouse, for sure. I don't think there was any part not suitable for kids either, if I recall, although my kids are older, so my 'hit the pause button and evict the kids' mode was off. Definitely one to watch, though, even though not a 'western' theme (it does mention hunting and stuff though ).
Doctors for Sensible Gun Laws "first do no harm" - gun control LAWS lead to far more deaths than 'easy access' ever could.
For some good laughs it's hard to beat "Grumpy Old Men" ( Ann Margret and ice fishing!).
"Rancho Delux" is a cool laid-back modern western.
"Light Horsemen" is a great WW1 movie.

Have to vote for this. Also "Second Hand Lions" with Robert Duval. If you haven't seen that one you're missing out.

+1 on the Bourne series and Master and Commander. The latter movies is one of the sleepers of the decade. Russell Crowe is spectacular...gotta love the "lesser of two weevils" scene! Turn up the bass for the cannons.....great opening scene when Crowe's ship is ripped to shreds.
