Re: What Are You Hunting with Your Levergun...

Deer hunting I generally use a JM Marlin XLR in .308 Marlin Express with Leupold Scope or a Winchester 1895 carbine with Williams foolproof in 30-06. For larger than deer, I like my Turnbull Marlin Cowboy in .50 Alaskan. It puts the smackdown on game.

Does anyone convert the magazine tubes on ROSSI R 92s to the style like Henry does? It seems to be a safer system especially for unloading. That is one ugly rifle. I like walnut and blue and if I am hunting in snow or pouring rain, I pull out my JM Marlin XLR in .308ME with the nice leupold 2 x7x 33 in silver. That solves any objections in my book.

wrong chambering. my guess is that 30-30 is the best selling lever rifle chambering (non handgun round) so they picked it. I would chamber it in .348, 45-90, 450 Alaskan, 50 Alaskan and 50-110.

Is this 500 too long for a 1886? Or would a 1895 be more appropriate? It is almost three inches long, so about the length of the old Mauser battle cartridges. I shoot the Barnes 275 grain at 1900 fps as my normal load in my .500 sw. The recoil is much less than my 3 inch SW 29 in 44 magnum with 300 grain bullets. The 6.5 inch .500 is pretty heavy, its ported and it has very good recoil absorbing grips. I really like it for hunting.
