Fun Pics

Long time ago, before losing all guns in a tragic canoe accident on Lake MI, I had this. Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley in .44 Mag 7.5" barrel. Pic is loaded with Garrett Hammerheads. Those bullets sure do fill the chamber throats.

Re: This 'n That

Many years ago I bought a box of 500 copper jacket bullets for 44 caliber. I did not recognize the brand. Got them cheap from a guy I knew. Looked them up online and seemed to be made from a California company that went out of business. Loaded them 44 mag under Unique, forget how much powder, and th...

Re: Favorite/Least Favorite to Reload/Most Reloaded Cartridges

Favorite to reload - 44 Special and 44 Mag
Least favorite - All of them. It's work. I need a reloading slave or indentured servant.
Most reloaded - 44 Mag and 44 Special

Soon to be hated or liked, .35 Rem for Marlin levergun. Don't have the dies yet.

Re: Funky Shotshell

A most excellent point! I'm good for dispatching at least 36 ducks & pheasants (combined) that are intent on ensuring my demise. Ain't easy living NWI for sure.

Funky Shotshell

So, I recently have been attacked repeatedly by ducks and pheasant. The stories are too terrible to tell as I'm sure it would cause many a man to experience PTSD. Looking around I found these older Winchester shells. From what I researched they will ONLY work on duck and pheasant, but will work very...

Re: Powder $$

Over a month ago I bought a 1 pound can of a powder I have never used before. Paid $47 at Cabelas. Found same powder in 8 pound canister online, including HazMat charge, came out to $43.53 per pound. They didn't offer 8 pound cans at Cabelas. If they did, and I could pick it up locally, it would hav...

Re: Blued revolvers & holster wear

Before I lost all of my guns in 2021 in a canoe tragedy trying to cross Lake Michigan, I had a Ruger Blackhawk .44 Special with 5.5" barrel. It had some holster wear on one side of the muzzle and I liked it. Showed it was used in a good way. However, I sent it to Ruger to get the recoil shield ...

Re: First experiment with fire lapping

Thank you for the ideas, Walt. I thought the same as you....357 diameter barrels don't have thread choke (at least not often). However, if it can go wrong then it will happen to me. The gun was hardly shot, the barrel is shiny clean, and I slugged it twice. Slug stops at the beginning of the frame. ...

Re: First experiment with fire lapping

Got a Smith model 15 recently that seemed to have tight cylinder chamber throats. .358 lead bullets will not pass through easily at all. So before wanting to ream the throats, I wanted to check the bore size. Pushed a lubricated .375 round ball through with a pencil, after plastic hammer tap start, ...

44 Weekend

A nice weekend for 44 loading. Lyman bullets for the Special and Saeco bullets for the Magnum. It seems all of my favorite Alliant powders are no longer available. Luckily I still have some in stock. Went to Cabela's yesterday and got Win 231 for the very first time. Looking forward to trying new po...

Re: Most accurate Blackhawk caliber?

I got a new Blackhawk in 44 Special years ago 5.5" barrel. Slugged the bore after a bit, and sure enough the barrel was choked at the threads. Fire-lapped it with approximately 60 rounds and it seems to be more accurate than I can shoot it now. Need to file down the front sight a bit.

Re: Let’s talk about shotguns for serious use.

Mine is an old Sears & Roebuck 12ga pump with 00 buck. Cut the original barrel down to 19+ inches. Original barrel length was 28", but was shooting off. Too cheap a gun to put money in to fix. Now it works great for home defense. Action is very slick. Now it's still useful with a different ...

I ordered a Colt 1851 Navy earlier this year on the internet. Was delivered to my front door with no paperwork. Too bad I lost it in a tragic canoe incident not long after.

Re: 44 Magnum Carbine Performance

I have a Marlin 1894 in 44 mag (20" barrel) that does 2" groups at 100 yards. Been using Hornady 240 grain XTP bullets under a heavy load of WW296 powder. Shot a handful of deer with this rig, and have never recovered a bullet. The deer never go very far. That bullet and load is a hammer.

Re: Convewrting FMJ into better defensive rounds...?

I would say that penetration is very important. I know a man that is still walking around after being shot twice in the face and once in the neck. Happened to him years ago. The only thing that saved him was the cartridge used... .32 acp.

I love my Marlin .44 mag. It's a beautiful gun and shoots like it was made for me. The caliber depends on you. I havn't had the pleasure of shooting a 45-70 yet, but that is on the list. Get what feels right in your gut.

I got my first deer yesterday....actually, I got two of them. 37 years old with a Marlin 1894 in .44 Magnum with a 20" barrel. I was at the Indiana Dunes National Park for a deer cull. I hiked the sand dunes for a couple hours since dawn. A group of 3 does came out of the woods towards me and I...
