44 Lyman HPs
Anyone ever test or hunt with these? Had the mold for years and cast a few. Big hollow points. Will try in Ruger Blackhawk and Marlin 1894. Gas checks need to be added. Always used Hornady XTPs but the lead was free.

Wow, that’s a really big nose cavity. They ought to be devastating on whatever they hit. Nice job on the casting too.
Re: 44 Lyman HPs
I shot a big goat with the .45 Colt equivalent. It weighed 300 grains. I had it in the smaller Colt frame, not the large Ruger, so I loaded it to about 800 fps. I got a fairly close shot on the goat and it whacked it but I hit too high, above the lungs. It took off running, ran 50 or 75 yards and stopped. The next shot I used a Keith 260 gr. SWC and that put him down. The big huge hollowpoint did not exit on a perfect crossways body shot. The Keith did.

So, my bullets won't work. Oh, well. Back to the drawing board.
Put gas checks on them. Need to lube and load. Want to see what these will do in a Marlin 1894 Rifle around 1600 fps on deer.

Are they too long to cycle through the action? You could always put 'em up in 44 Special brass.

Watch for your primers getting backed out in the tube magazine of the 1894 with heavy loads. Those HPS don't look like they'll have any support against the primer to keep it in the case. The only HPs I use in a levergun are those with enough of a surface area on the nose to have some contact with the perimeter of the primer, as well as the case.

Sorry, fellas. I was being sarcastic about my bullets won't work. If Mr. Taylor's 300 grain bullet won't kill a gnarly goat, then my measly 260 gr bullets are barely good enough for guinea pigs.
I'll have to make some lube and try them out. Never used gas checks before either.

Got it. I blew the shot and went through top part of the lungs. That's the only critter I ever shot with them so it ain't much of a test. I wasn't surprised about the lack of penetration. I was surprised he didn't drop at the shot. But that was my fault.Keith D wrote: ↑Tue Sep 09, 2025 7:07 am Sorry, fellas. I was being sarcastic about my bullets won't work. Ah, you were pulling our chains!
Those 260s will work just fine, I've used 180s from a muzzle loader and every deer died just fine and I found every bullet under the hide. Close or far they all died quick.
