Re: Savage 99 for polar bear
Ben East killed his first polar bear with a 99, in .300. He said in his book "Bears" that he had thought the .300 Savage adequate for all his big game hunting until that day, but no longer held that opinion. It's a pretty interesting story - the bear died right at the tips of his boots.

My favorite is an old Bianchi thumb break in a basket weave pattern. It was made for a 6" S&W K-frame, but it fits my Colt Old Army just as well. It's forward canted a little, just enough to make the draw of a 6" revolver easy. Some of those others are real pretty, though. Oh, yeh, pro...

I think Winchester's costs were just too high. They offered a limited run of Model 92s a couple of years ago, and they were priced around $900 - $1000. You could buy a Marlin or Rossi for less than half that, or even a Browning B-92. Heck, I paid less for a 92 made in 1895. I heard they lost money o...

There are some pretty hot handloads too, for a strong rifle like a 53. 100 years ago cartridges in .32-20, .38-40 et. al. were sold in two powers: the black powder or equivalent performance, for pistols and weak rifle actions like too Winchester 73; and the "HP" or high power loads for mod...

Deerskin clothes weren't fashion items at all, they were how you survived the winter when you didn't have wool, Gore-Tex, etc. You made the suit yourself (or your squaw did) with the hair on the inside, and wore it all winter. Supply and demand, Hermann.
The .357 was less popular than the .44, so they made fewer of them, which means there are fewer for the collectors to bid for. For exactly the same reason, the Ruger Redhawk .357 brings collector price. Not many shooters want a 4-lb .357, so few were made.

I've heard elsewhere that RSA doesn't allow semiauto guns into the country. If that's true, the "any rifle or handgun" thing might need to be modified a skosh.
Would it be a good idea to take a shotgun for bird hunting?

Nix on the .38-40 unless you reload.
Factory ammo for the .38-40 is loaded to black powder pressures and performance, and I would feel undergunned on a hog hunt. Better ammo for modern rifles (of which the 1889 is one) was commercially loaded 100 years ago, but no more.
