Re: Hunting with cast 30 caliber bullets
I don't know much about the mould you are using but I'll say that I have used cast on deer in .30 caliber for years, mostly the .30-30. My favorite is the Lyman 311041 that weighs 180.5 grs sized and lubed ready to load. I have used 25 to 28 grains of 3031 for years depending on the gun. I don't kno...

When I trapped (outlawed here in WA state now) it was always a .22 pistol. Early in the season I might carry a rifle it were still deer or elk season, but always a .22 for dispatching anything big enough that a club wasn't enough to handle something big.

You bet I do! About 90% of the time for deer, bear and elk mostly. The other 10% of the time is with a single action thumbbuster

In the 38-55 I like 31 1/2 grains of 3031 with a 275gr cast bullet sized .379.
In the 45-70 I like 42 grains 3031 with a 420gr cast bullet sized .459.

He's not electable because he's a bad liar. He lies as much as Bill Clinton (say 10 Hail Marys, wash mouth out with soap), but with half the skill. That is why I think you are wrong. While checking the zero of my 30-30 today I shot 3 groups at 100 yards using bullets cast from my 174gr Lyman mould, weighing 180.5grs sized and lubed. Sizes were 1 1/4", 7/8" and 1 7/8". I was using 27grs 3031.

When I first posted this, I was thinking we all lived in OBAMALAND, say 5/6 years from now and the goverment has decided that REASONABLE amount of guns equates to one Rifle, one Pistol. We would have to get rid of all weapons except those two (And later I added perhaps we are able to keep a shotgun...

Mike, If it was totally hitting the fan and you had no more than 10 to 15 min. to vacate your life as you knew it, what would you toss in the back or trunk of your vehicle? This would be with the mind set that there is a very high probability you would never be returning or seeing your home again. ...

Man, had a bunch of 'first thoughts' just blow through my mind  The first was my Marlin Cowboy in .44 mag, the second one of the '86's, probably the 45-70 and the 3rd was my .348. Even though I'm a single action guy (only own 1 Smith 624 I"ve never shot...!) I'd say just stay with your .44 Smith and go with a good stout load with a relatively heavy cast bullet. I"ve never recovered one (from 270 to 330 grs) out of even elk with any of my .44's. Killed a few very lar...
