I have a Winchester 71 and a Browning High Grade 71 Carbine both guns have the original metal butt plates but I added a slip on Limbsaver to both. They work well and do not alter the rifles. I've got one in a 1895 USRAC Winchester. I have a slip on limbsaver butt pad and recoil is not a problem even from the bench. That limb saver tames it right down. I use factory and handloaded ammo, no problem.
