Cylinder Gap demonstration (safety issue)

Post by AJMD429 »

.
This would be a good video to show a new revolver shooter…

I had a patient years ago, who had such a bad cut on the palm of his left hand from the gas escaping at the cylinder gap that it not only cut across the palm of his hand, butblew powder residue into his tendon sheaths, and he almost lost his hand.

The TV series Mythbusters did a test with a S&W .500, they made a hand out of chicken wings and it did a number on it!

As bad is guys putting their thumb UP when shooting a crossbow. More than one guy I know has really torn up their thumbs!

Back in the late 80's or early 90's a fairly well-known lady hunter removed part of her left-hand first finger by having it near the barrel-cylinder gap of a 454 Casull. If I remember correctly she was in Africa at the time.

A friend of mine and I were laying down in the prone position shooting, and I was using my Super Blackhawk. Just as I fired a butterfly happily flew about 2 feet to the right of my cylinder gap, and the poor thing was disintegrated….

I was taught from 5 years old to keep my hand back with any revolver. No why ever told. Just taught to do it. I guess my training was good, because I have never been injured by a revolver.

I discovered the cylinder gap blast on my own as a teenager with a Blackhawk 357.

I tried a fast draw and burned a hole in a lined flannel shirt.

Then later I tried adjusting the rear sight using a rolled-up Sears & Roebuck sleeping bag as a rest. Ripped a big burned hole in it.

In my mid 20's I was shooting revolvers with a friend. It was winter and my friend was shooting with his brand new rabbit fur lined leather gloves. While shooting two handed he inadvertently allowed his off-hand thumb to ride a little too forward. When he touched off my 44 the air was instantly filled with fur. The cylinder gap blast had blown the tip off the thumb of his glove. Thankfully he was uninjured but it was definitely a teachable moment.
