Of all the Winchester leverguns ...

Post by Bill in Oregon »

.. which one have you always wanted to own, load for and shoot -- that you haven't. For me it is the Winchester Model 1876 in .45-75. Played with one in .45-60 for a bit, but it "waren't the same."

The 1876 for me too. Never owned one though. We were driving home from a trip one time. We stopped into KTP to look around, and I was shocked to see a beautiful 1876 Express in 50-95. I think they wanted 6500 or 7k for it. My wife told me to buy it, but we had kids in college, and it was a pile of money for someone like me. I let it go.
Something about that huge 1876 receiver I always liked. Weird, because I never use my larger Winchesters.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

Technically... not a Winchester, but closely associated with the name. Henry 1860 in a "carbine" form... Uberti makes one w/an 18-½" bbl. I've had one on order for several years now with one of the importers, but they say they need 5 orders to have them produced. Oh yeah, I want mine with the steel frame. It's a catalog item with the brass frame. That 18-½" bbl will hold ten of the Cowboy45specials... But I'd feel more comfortable shooting 45ACP, maybe even +P pressure loads with the steel frame.

But, I've got the Winchesters I've ever thought I'd want so far... Highwall, lowwall, 1886, 1892, and the ever-faithful mdl 94 in Trapper, Carbine & Rifle form.

Model 1892 octagon barreled rifle in .44-40. I have the .25-20, .32-20, and .38-40, just need that .44-40.

I'm still chasing that '95 SRC in .303 British. My favorite Winchester chambered in one my favorite cartridges.
I've come across a few and they are pricey, but finding one with a bore that doesn't look like a Cleveland city street is the hard part.

Model 1885 in 38-55 or 45-70 or 50-70. Yeah, it's a singleshot, but it's definitely got an underlever!

I would love to add a Model 1894 in 32-40, 1886 in 33 Win and a Winchester or Uberti 1876 in any caliber to my collection.
So many guns.....not enough coins!

For me for 20 years it was a Winchester 88 until I was led to a 1959 model in .308 in 2012 as part of an estate. I bought it from the wife who bought it for her husband new from Winchester for a Christmas present in 1959. Her husband thought that the stock was so nice he made it a safe queen. She ordered it with the recoil pad from Winchester and I added the Redfield scope and sling.

I think that the Win 88 is the most beautiful levergun ever made and the .308 is my favorite caliber for it. Unfortunately, he developed Parkinson's disease shortly after she gave it to him so he never got a chance to fire it so I got it as an unfired 1959 Winchester 88 some 53 years later.

An '86 SRC in 45-70 and the Browning would suit me fine.

A '66 in 45 Colt.

I can always make room for a 94 Winchester.

Bill, Having shot and owning a Very Early 1876, 45/75, built in 76, shipped 1877 I understand your desire. The smooth, but mechanical feel of the toggle linkage, the sleek lines, and overall size. The perfect balance point. This is a 26” Octagon in 45/75, set triggers, an early 3 digit serial number with the provenance to go either it. Your right next door in Oregon, your welcome to visit anytime and play. I keep 100 or so loaded rounds at all times.

Wow, Bearskinner, you have a wonderful Winchester there! Would love to see a photo or two. I used to be next door in Oregon, but now I am down south in old New Mexico or I would ask mom if I could come over and play. 8)

Really hard to load pics today!we are the second family to be caretakers of this rifle. It’s a 1876, created in 76, delivered in 2/1877 to a cowboy guiding on the Oregon trail. He wanted one of those new “Big Bore” Centennial Rifles and used it for 3 more years guiding, before settling in Washington state. 60 years later my great uncle acquired it from the grandson of the original purchaser. He got the provenance thru a Winchester Olin letter, in 1941. His son my uncle passed it to me a number of years ago, and here it remains. An all original condition 3 did it serial numbered Centennial model 76, in 45/75.
Making the impossible to find original cases, I start with 50 Alaskan, cut to length, de burr, run thru sizer, final trim turn down and de burr, then load. Keeping loads light, it’s still a joy to shoot.

+1

A '92 trapper in .45 Colt. By trapper I'm thinking SBR length, 14". Yes, I know they weren't made in .45 Colt, but I had several guns in this caliber before the unfortunate boat accident, and none in .44-40, and I don't want to add calibers at this point.
