Finally Got To The Range
with the Cimarron .45 Colt. I had been gone from home traveling for nearly a month, off and on, and the fence rows had grown up several feet in grass and weeds. The yard was deep. I mowed one day and then spent almost 3 days running the weedeater. Got it cleaned up and then headed to the Range.
The first thing I noted was the gun will stand some trigger work. There is no creep at all to the let-off, but boy is it heavy! The sear seems to have too much positive angle. Careful stone work and shooting it for awhile will take care of that.
I ran 125 rounds through it with 3 different loads. The best group of the day was with the old Lyman copy of the Colt bullet, #454190 and 8.0 gr. of Unique.
The other loads I used were the Keith #454424 and 8.0 gr. of Green Dot and a 250 gr. cast FN bullet over 6.0 gr. of 700X. With these loads my groups were 1 1/2" to 2" .... as were some with the load pictured above. Big problem is my 79 year old eyes! My first shot the sights are clear. For my first shot. After that things get progressively fuzzier. I have a different pair of glasses I am gonna try shooting with on my next outing and see how that helps.
The Cimarron came with 2 cylinders, one in .45 ACP and that will be my next run with it. We had a good rain last night so today I will most likely work around the place, maybe see if I can get the trigger more to my liking. So far the sights ain't bad as far as POA so I ain't messing with them. I think the only thing I will do in the long run is put steel trigger guard and grip frame on it.

I really like the look of the brass grip frame Jim.
Re: Finally Got To The Range
Thanks for the pictures, Jim. Your group size shows no suggestion of fuzzy eyes. Nice shootiung!

Thanks Scott. I am still undecided. I like the gun. You cannot have too many .45 Colts!Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Wed Jun 25, 2025 8:02 am I really like the look of the brass grip frame Jim.

I’m missing the SAA I sent back with Bobby Tyler. I really like carrying that gun on the weekends.
Re: Finally Got To The Range
Too many Colts?
Well ... if you need someone to watch some of them for you I can recommend someone who would be interested. You may have a hard time getting them back from me though.

Re: Finally Got To The Range

Nice looking revolvers, .45 Colt is a good partner in the woods.
It is not the critic who counts
Re: Finally Got To The Range
Just the looks. I don't really mind the brass gripframe and most likely will leave it. The shape and feel is good in the hand. But I have this awful habit of liking to tinker with things and change them around just because I can. Sometimes even when I shouldn't.

Save your grip frame and stocks as I have a gun that would benefit from the change.JimT wrote: ↑Wed Jun 25, 2025 2:30 pmJust the looks. Both the Gun and Your Shooting are VERY Impressive. If our Old Friend from the East See's this He may do a War Dance.....

Re: Finally Got To The Range
Could I get in on that action?

Re: Finally Got To The Range
Jim,
Is that an older Uberti, or the more recent Pietta version? I believe Cimarron switched not all that long ago, probably because of the three click safety hammer Uberti began to produce.

It is a Pietta. I was impressed when I opened it up. It is finished inside as nicely as it is outside. Next time I take it apart I will take some photos ... if I remember. The only thing different from the Colt SAA is the spring for the cylinder hand (pawl) is like the Ruger single actions .. a coil spring and plunger.
