30-30 Trail Boss SUBS
Anybody shooting jacketed subsonics in 30-30 w TB powder.
I know we are downloading down past even 300blk energies
300blk is 1:7 for 220gr
30-30 is 1:10 so more like 190gr
But for no ears plinking and practice it would be cool. Probly double as a rabbit and grouse load.
30-30 is a big step up in case capacity from the Blackout so most likely nothing in common to compare as a source.

Re: 30-30 Trail Boss SUBS
I've won several bottles of TB and have given them all back. It's not a powder I find useful. But... that said, I've read about it's use and the often suggested method of finding a starting load is to mark you case where the base of the bullet will sit, fill the case to that point, weigh it, multiply the result by 0.7, and that's your starting load. I've heard it's recommended not to compress it, or use less than minimum loads. Maybe someone has better into than I... or has at least experimented a little with it.

I have been pleased w TB in 32-20 for subs, with lead
But were talking WAY different cases capacity than a 30-30 and, most likely, jacketed

Re: 30-30 Trail Boss SUBS
The only reduced load with jacketed I run is the Speer 100gr Plinker with Unique. The heaviest bullet is the 170FP from Bear Creek, also with Unique. I've never clocked either of them but the Plinker is still going fast enough to hear the bullet snap, not real loud but it's there.
The GMDR site has a lot of reduced data although it's pretty much all cast.

Samsi , that site doesn’t mention the use of a filler , I assume those loads didn’t use any ?

Not to my knowledge, if you read his Levergun Performance Studies you'll see that his goal with powder selection is uniform "flash ignition" (vs irregular continuous ignition - detonation).

Hodgdon data has loads for 160 & 175. Open rifle data click on TB then 30-30.348win wrote: ↑Tue Apr 29, 2025 7:26 pm Anybody shooting jacketed subsonics in 30-30 w TB powder.

Not in .30-30 but I have in .38 Special. Seeing as they both run in the same bullet weight range (ignoring case capacity here). I'm surprised that I can't find my Trail Boss data for a 200 grain bullet but the load didn't stabilize. If I remember to check my notebook when I get home, I will see if I wrote it down.
What I have immediately though is that I used a 125 grain Berry's bullets with 4.0 grains and got 801 fps based on my notes. I also wrote down that the data says I can go up to 5.3 grains with that setup. That's a very similar weight to the Lyman 311008 bullet that some others have experimented with in 30-30.
I hit up the Hodgdon RLDC to poke around and found SUB data for the 190 SUB X is 10.5 for .308 Winchester. 308 Winchester is around 10 grains of case capacity more than 30-30.
They also list a 150 grain bullet for 300 BLK at 6.0. No min or max just 6.0 grain.
Finally, the RLDC has a 175 grain Hornady SUBX over 11.7 grains of TB at 1065.
Hopefully that helps.

Re: 30-30 Trail Boss SUBS
I remembered to look at my notebook this morning only to be disappointed by myself from a few years ago. I did not record data for the 200 grain or the 160 grain bullets I ran out of my 357 Marlin 1894. I am disappointed.
That said, I pulled out a box of empty 30-30 cases to see what the different powder loads looked like. I don't think 4 grains is going to be great as the amount of fill was pretty low so I'd say don't go that low but 6 grains looked like it was about half full. Might could work for mid weights but the usual disclaimer is "use at your own risk sort of thing applies"
I also did the 11.7 grain RLDC load to see how that looked and it pretty much filled the case to the top of the neck. Just enough room for a bullet. Since you said 190 grain bullets, that's where I would start there and see if you need to use less of a charge to seat the longer bullet.
I forgot how much I like TB and I really hope Hodgdon makes good on their statement of it possibly coming back this year.
