Foods that Whitetails eat - (kind of everything...???)

Post by AJMD429 »

.
At least according to this article...

https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/nutrit ... r-AA1qtfAT

We used to have a neighbor with a 5 acre riverbottom 'crop set-aside' field that was about 30% that really tall white and yellow clover. Pretty good der territory there for sure.

Thanks. From what I have read, deer love red maple leaves, blackberry briar leaves, redbud buds/shoots in the spring, and dogwood buds.

Want to draw deer to your tree stand- hinge cut a tree just when the leaves start to turn, at that point the leaves are full of sugars and the deer will go nuts for them. I've seen deer walk to a fresh cut oak tree to feed with skidders, loggers working on the same tree.
I've also seen deer eat corn from an old guy pile!
I've seen them eat mountain Laurel and bamboo. Laurel is supposedly toxic.
I have heard that molasses feeds( horse and sheep) is bad for them causing internal bleeding. No idea if true but boy do they like it!

I have heard of deer eating gut piles.

Hinge cutting a tree is a solid tactic for early season.

The deer that really eat EVERYTHING are the mule deer who hang around towns (which is by far the most reliable place to find deer here in Central Oregon). I think the reason they always look "scroungy" is that they eat so many different things that a deer really shouldn't otta be eating (flowers and leaves of every possible variety).
