Marlin 39AS, from 1996, unfired

Post by trooper joe »

Found an unfired 39AS made in 1996 at my local gun shop. Saw it one day and went home to thinks about it. After reading about these fantastic .22 lever guns I called my dealer first thing the next morning and had him set it aside for me.

I thought there was a scratch on the left side of the receiver but when I got it home I could hardly see any evidence of a scratch. I installed a spare NOS front sight hood (that part was missing). I really cannot see a mark on this gun.

I had an older and sort of beat up model 39 years ago. This one will be a keeper.

That's a nice find. From what I understand Ruger is supposed to resurrect the Model 39 next year. Has anyone else heard this? If they do, I'd love to see that little 39 TDS with the straight grip and 16" barrel in their catalog.

.
I'd like the 16" version, though I do prefer the curved grip.

I personally like long barrels and pistol grip stocks. Better sighting radius for iron sights with a longer barrel.

Have the last one that came through our local gun shop. Only shot it once.

Nice score. I've owned only 1, a 39AS, I sold it a few years back when things got tight. I'd really rather have a 39A though, as I prefer the half cock notch and non-rebounding hammer. The one I had shot really well.

Perhaps they see all those HRA lever action 22s as signaling a good market. A nearly two year old article in Outdoor Life says "The Marlin folks even told me that the Model 39 will be brought back, but that will take a couple years." That will be nice, but I'm pleased with my HRA.
