Beaches combination front sight

Post by marlinman93 »

I collect old gun sights, and have looked for a Beaches combination sight with windage for many years. I own several without windage adjustment, but those with windage are extremely rare. This one came up at an auction and I was the lucky winner!

Now I really like that!

I could use several of those. But if you tell us they are rare, I'm sure they are RARE!

That is elegant but simple, they don't make stuff like that anymore.

I have a couple Lyman globe sights that work very similar. They used the same folding wing adjuster, and inside the globe they had a peep or post aperture. Push one down and the other pops up. They shared a pivot screw and were mounted 90 degrees to each other to make one fold flat inside when the other popped up.
When I think about the equipment makers had back when these were made it amazes me! It would be easy with a CNC machine today, but back then the equipment was pretty darn basic and lots of hand work required.

I've had several Beach combination sights over the years, from MVA and others, but was unaware of the windage-adjustable version. Cool find, Vall.
According to Buffalo Arms, this sight was patented in 1867.

I may have given some erroneous info based on the auction description! This is not made by Beaches, but is a Lyman #8 windage combination sight. Had to go to my copy of Tom Rowe's Old American Gun Sights book and saw nothing under Beaches, so looked and found it under Lyman.
I see BACO lists their repro as a Beach, but calls it a repro of the #8, so they're making the same error I did with their repro.

The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

I had one of those MVA versions on my old Sharps rifle. But I was also unaware that a windage adjustable version existed. This is really neat!
