cute and handy little winchester

Post by hfcable »

another one i really like: model 94 in 30 WCF, an Extra Light Weight , sometimes called pencil barrel , as the barrel itself is very thin; this one is a takedown and has had some use but nice for its age. bore is perfect

I like this one better but again me and that sight would never get along. Does not look like a sight for a lever action .

That 94 looks just about perfect to me. I was bidding on one similar, wasn't a takedown but it was chambered in .38-55, one of my all time favorites. I let it get away and have been kicking myself ever since.

Have fun!

Harold, it is a beauty. How does that rear sight work for you? Ought to keep a feller from "crawling the stock"! 8)

Being as I'm partial to Model 64's and 55's this one trips my trigger. I bet it's quick in the offhand.

it really is a handy little rifle.

i have tang sights on a high percentage of my lever guns and on some others. i cann shoot well with them and faster too.

' as i replied on the little marlin carbine " that tang sight is called a 'special base' model and these models were available for marlin, winchester, savage and others. they appeal to those who like to wrap their thumb over the stock and they also give a slightly longer sighting radius. these models are very hard to find."

Very nice 94. Obviously ordered by someone who had some real particular thoughts on what would be the ideal rifle for him.

Segue a little bit - I remember when a guy could go to the Chevrolet dealer and order a Bel Air (or Biscayne, etc) with 283 cubic inch engine, 3 speed overdrive transmission, sintered iron brakes, 3.70 rear axle, positraction, etc. Now a fella has a choice of a few packages that may have what he wants, but which includes a bunch of extra stuff of no interest. I understand how that simplifies work on the assembly line, but it just isn't the same as being able to pick out exactly what you want.

Really wanted that little carbine, but it was a few years ago and one of those weeks/ months I didn't have the $ to play with.
I have my grandfather's .38-55 that made me really love the cartridge and a custom Ruger #1 that shoots as good as it looks. Probably the prettiest rifle I've ever owned.

For me, that's all new, unique, but I believe I would fall in love with it, given the chance! That tang sight looks like it would be easier to get along with, than the Marbles I put on my Marlin, close to eye, no interference with my grip! I love it, especially the long barrel and shorter mag!

I've looked at this rifle several times, and forgive me, but "Dandy and Handy " is a much more fitting description! I'd love to put that rifle to use on these mountain deer! But I remember seeing I believe? a Mod23 Savage that had near the exact same tang sight setup with the barrel sight combo. That rifles owner was a hunter, who knew how put em to use! Thus a great hunting setup!

This is identical to the rifle I was referring to. It's a Savage 1923 NRA Sporter, one the few 22's made to be a precision quality rifle of that time. The Mod52 Winchester and this model where considered two of the best American made.

You've give me the itch to get out shoot my Marlin. Shot it winter before last, found out it loves my 160ftx loads. The barrel sight is zeroed at 100yds, and I believe the Tang will be near 225yds, but I need to go confirm it? I've taken couple deer with it using 170gr Win PPs. But with the tang ive taken few yotes and a turkey way out there. Rifles sighted this way are real hunting rifles, without a scope!

Very, very rare rifle with more special order items than Carter has liver pills…..those pencil barrels are few and far between…….i also like the Marbles long base flexible….gives a longer sighting plane…got a few laying around here. It’s one sight you can use on an 1895…one screw and epoxy…..

Nice stuff Harold…..it’s a shame we are all only “temporary custodians” of such nice Americana.

Pretty cool, thanks for sharing. I've never seen one of those rear sights either.
