22 mag steel cases???
Gentlemen, I was speaking with a forum member yesterday who did some really cool things with 22 LR using steel cases that he re-primed. I am wanting to get back to my handloading projects including 22 Mag and I was wondering if anyone knows if anyone ever produced ammo for it using steel cases (say like Wolf or soviet made) and if anyone might have some for sale? -Tutt

Yes, it was definitely made in the USSR. I have a sealed spam can of it. Whether or not other countries made it I cannot say for certain but believe East Germany made steel cased 22 lr. There was a video I remember watching about the East German AK 22 trainer variant called the MPi-69. It was a post Cold War video in which, IIRC, they fired the rifle with both original steel cased and brass cased stuff for comparison. I'll look for it and pass it on if successful. It's in German BTW but interesting nonetheless.

I bought a case of Russian made steel cased 22lr. I still have a couple of bricks. I stopped shooting it when I had a squib during a rapid fire string. It ringed the barrel of my 10/22. It was an extremely accurate Shilen...was being the key word!

Re: 22 mag steel cases???
My bad, I didn't articulate myself very well. I know 22 LR was made, but what I need and was hoping for was 22 Mag cases. I'm working on a little hot-rodding 22 Mag project and it will work with brass cases, but if I could find some steel cases, that would probably be a game changer! I'm told since my original post that it is highly unlikely 22 Mag ammo was produced with steel cases. Sorry for the confusion. -Tutt

THREAD INTERRUPTER WARNING.
I have seen ringed barrels that the bulge in the bore did not hurt the accuracy at all. I don't have any experience working with ringed barrels so I am sure that is not always the case. And with an extremely accurate barrel I can understand the ring in the bore giving some accuracy issues.

Trust me Jim the barrel was an honest 1/2" at 50yd gun before- it turned into a 3-6" at 25yds!

Re: 22 mag steel cases???
The ring was just past the forearm, I gave it to a guy who was going to turn it into an integral suppressor. Since it was a .920 bull barrel he figured he could counter bore it, make baffles and cap it. Dunno if he did it or not.
I darn near cried after that squib...
worst yet was it shot its best with CCI std velocity , green tag a close second.
