Standard 22LR rifling twist rate?
Anybody here know what the standard twist rate is for 22LR? Have a Mini14 in .223, and yes it is .223 not 5.56, with 1-9 twist that I was going to run 44.5gr cast lead bullets in SOMETIMES 22LR type velocity for going after squirrels or bunnies. TIA

Yup, 1:16 is the standard twist for 22 rimfire.

16-1 for long rifle. Shorts and longs use a different twist rate. I don't know about 22 mag.

I thought shorts were different but figured long & long rifle were the same and nowadays nobody is chambering for shorts anymore.

Thanks guys. Looks like 1-9 twist is a bit tight for what I have planned, but OUGHT to work. Just need to put it on paper to REALLY find out. BTW, the lead that I'm making the Lyman 225438 44gr LRN bullets out of is 1-16 alloy, which should be soft enough to mushroom at about 1k fps.

.
I've shot 22 LR through my Mini-14 via a Ceiner conversion kit, with decent accuracy - tennis ball sized targets at 25 yards easy at 50 yards a mild challenge.

What is the twist for a 22 Short and or Long chambered gun?

I've got one of those, but since the barrel change I can't use it. Original barrel was 1-7, swapped over to 1-9 bull barrel.
Re: Standard 22LR rifling twist rate?
Why would the kit not function with the new barrel ?? I am supposing the reason is not the difference in twist !

Re: Standard 22LR rifling twist rate?
That's weird - how is it that it won't work - does it not feed, or is it just not accurate...? Or will the 'fake chamber' in the kit not fully seat/chamber in the Mini-14...? (I could see a 'match' type chamber or a 223 vs 5.56 gun MIGHT be enough tighter that the fake/floating chamber or whatever it is called that is part of the conversion kit, might not fully seat. If that is the case I'd think you could stone the 'neck' of that part down some for that purpose. The more concentric it is the more accurate it should be though, so if that's the issue I'd go carefully and slowly.

Re: Standard 22LR rifling twist rate?
The conversion works with the standard pencil barrel but not with the larger bull barrel that I had installed. Not enough room between the gas port and barrel.
Besides, I worked around that by DOWNLOADING with cast bullets. 2.5gr bullseye with 45gr RN/GC bullets, turned it into a straight pull bolt action.
