Info on Winchester 94 Ranger

Post by jabbostark »

I just picked up a Winnie 94 Ranger pre-crossbolt manufactured in the 1980's. It has a John Wayne "The Duke" 1907-1979 coin on the right side of the butt stock. I've never seen one of these before. How about you guys? I have been unable to find any info on a "John Wayne" Ranger model. I'm just wondering if it is "genuine" or if it's a phony. Regardless, I got the rifle at a good buy. Just curious about it. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

If yours looks like any of these, then you have a John Wayne Comm. model.

If it doesn't, you have one of two things...a standard Win94 with a John Wayne medallion in the stock, or a standard Win94 with a complete buttstock from a John Wayne Comm.

pics would definitely help

It definitely is not a John Wayne Commemorative Model. It is a standard 94 Ranger in .30-30, plain jane, not gold engraved, no curved buttstock, no designation of any commemoration except the medallion in the stock. It's serial number places manufacture in 1980's. It is an angle eject (drilled and tapped on top of receiver) with rebounding hammer and like I said earlier, no crossbolt safety. My take on it is that someone added the Duke medallion later. It is in excellent shape (99%) and will be a huntin' gun for me and my 15 year old daughter. When she gets in from band competition, I'll haver her post some pics, Cause I don' know nuthin 'bout machinery. Thanks guys for your help!

Numrich arms used to sell Winchester's leftover commemorative stocks back in the late 70s/ early 80s(some even later). Most were missing the medallions but they were available separately. It could be the original stock got tweeked and one of the previous owners ordered one from them.

I suspect that Buffboy has nailed it. Or, in the case of your carbine, glued it! :P Can't locate any of my Winchester catalogs from the 1980s, but... certainly don't recall anything being offered like that. And given the continued success of JW commemorative items, I figure they'd have listed it.
