Post by BruceB »

Is the info on the conversion of the tang safety model 1886's to half-cock lost to us?

I found it very simple to cut the lower leg off, cut 3 coils, shape the half cock notch in the hammer and shape the sear to fit. I used the hammer and sear from a Win 94 as a general guide for the hammer and sear mods.

The cost was a dremel cut-off wheel and some time.
Kind regards,
Tycer

To get it really right you have to install a Browning hammer, trigger spring and trigger. The Browning hammer has a true half cock notch and the trigger and sear are one piece. That way you can eliminate the two piece Winchester trigger and sear, along with the little springs and plunger.

The aforementioned Browning parts are simple drop ins. The Browning hammer is to the left.

The Winchester strut fits nicely in the round recess in the back of the Browning hammer. You must clip the rebounding fork from the Winchester hammer. I also rounded to top fork for a smooth fit.

You have a very positive half cock with the Browning hammer.

Ditto with full cock.

These parts are removed when you use the simple one piece Browning Trigger/sear.

My next project with this gun is the pistol grip, if I EVER find a shotgun butt pistol grip buttstock. I already have all the metal parts, but no wood can be found, so far. Original '86 wood does not work.

I forgot to add that all of the Browning parts are available from Midwest Gun Works. A little expensive, but the correct solution to poor, lawyer induced devices.

Hi, Mike,

No luck getting a stock at Western Gun Parts, eh? Do you have a pg lower tang for your project? Miroku/Winchester? I hope you find a stock.

Red, I have the tang, lever, all screws, etc. I am insisting on a PG stock, so that's the hangup.

BTW, I'm currently discussing the possibility of going up to see if Great American Gunstock Co, of Yuba City, Ca can do what I want. They assure me that most certainly can. I've been told by some folks that their work is less than stellar, but I have to see for myself. 'Sides, they're only 40 miles away and the wood is reasonable enough. I'm seriously thinkin' about them do the fitting, too.
