The younger ones eat pretty good. Par boil to skim off the fat. Fry like rabbit.

Re: No. 8 whistle pig
Used to shoot a lot of them around here. Usually in hay fields after they were cut. My favorite rifle was a 22 hornet (BRNO with double set triggers). Haven't seen as many lately, the coyote population has gone up though.

Fox get em to eat Blaine.
Got the name from GunnyMack jb the ole timer.
That 4 buck is that light load stuff i bought, no mess at all in fact the pellets don`t go through at 20 yards.
Lots of yotes and fox here but they must not like them iceman.

Re: No. 8 whistle pig
Most of the old hay fields and pastures are now planted in soy and corn. Cows don't leave the barn anymore, pastures used to be the best place to look for them.

Re: No. 8 whistle pig
I spent a lot of time on my family's farms growing up looking for those little buggers. I had a cousin with a couple hundred acres not far from me who would give me $10 a piece for every woodchuck I brought him. They were murder on the soy beans. Best shot ever was at my last place. I walked of 436 paces from my back porch to one very dead woodchuck. That was with my Sako .222 Rem. It's one of those rifles that you just know where the bullet is going to go. That and I shot it just about every day back then. Now that I think about it, I don't think I've shot the thing in at least ten years. Gonna have to fix that!

Re: No. 8 whistle pig
Pitchy, I just found a Light Game Slug from Ballistic Products. It's a special wad for the small gauges that carries a single piece of buckshot. I ordered a pack of 410 and for my 28ga.
The 410 loads are making almost 2400 FPS!
These little buggers would certainly wreck a pigs day.
Sadly I lost my ground hog farm, owner got dementia, nursing home, passed and estate sold the farm to someone that turned it into horse farm... NO HUNTING.
Last pig I shot there was a sneaky devil, I could just see the front of its head at 200 poking thru the hedge row. I know my 17 Rem with a 6.5-20x was up to the task. I drilled him just above the nose between the eyes, not even a twitch.

Cool beans fellars and some good shootin, these pigs come right in the yard to eat grass and had a few that lived under the porch but no more.
I see something dragged off the carcass in the night.

Re: No. 8 whistle pig
I wish something would drag off the one that keeps burrowing down beside my basement. My niece has a pit bull that kills one pretty often. Maybe he'll get that one someday. I've shot several that occupied that burrow but I guess others squat there as soon as one goes away. Makes good practice for the 92 in 32-20.

Re: No. 8 whistle pig
There is always the ammonia trick if you are in an area where you cant shoot.
Cover the back door hole with plywood and a few rocks, concrete block, then pour a gallon of ammonia down the front door, cover the hole like back door and walk away. Ammonia fumes will sink all the way into the hole and suffocate the GH.dont need to worry about disposing with the carcass either.

Good job buddy!
You can pipe engine exhaust in the holes too. Then they get a permanent dirt nap.

Re: No. 8 whistle pig
Used to do that trick with gofers, use a real smoky engine and ya can see smoke coming out of the ground all over the yard.

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Re: No. 8 whistle pig
Pitchy check out Doc Watson's great tune "groundhog" on you tube
Re: No. 8 whistle pig
Scraped thin and well greased groundhog or woodchuck leather was supposedly the preferred muzzleloading round ball patching material.....
There are youtube videos that have tried to replicate leathern patches with much scraped and stretched goat hides with mixed results.....hard to get the leather thin enough for standard sized balls but the experimenters admit it might have been an option if all you had were much undersized balls.....

Pitchy need to scale down/up one of his mouse/bear traps for those ground hogs.
Even better would be if he could get the video camera set up to record it so we could his masterpiece in action.

Re: No. 8 whistle pig
The fear i have with any kind of large trap is something getting in it i don`t want in it, if i set one up and wasn`t around and one of the grad kids get caught in it i`d never get over it.
I have high hopes number 8 is the last one for a while, i appreciate your interest in my home made traps Gunny but to risky.

Re: No. 8 whistle pig
Ah now, I wasn't aware of little folks in your neck of the woods.
I understand the reluctance to set bigger traps. I know I sure wouldn't want to see a pet get into one!
Had a buddy in college that raised rabbits for food/sale. The darned feral cats would cause havoc with his bunnies. He checked out a book from the library on dead fall traps. Next thing I know he has his yard set up like a medieval dungeon with all sorts of stuff. Never got a single cat!
Once we learned the puddy tats hung out at the village dumpsters we put a big dent in the feral population! POP-.22, cat falls into dumpster.
