That was a great scene. Mine would have to be the scene where Newt get quirted by the Army Scout and Call rides his horse right into him and commences a serious whoopin! So many classic scenes in that movie it's hard to pick really.

I have to say after watching that I do have to agree.

I didn't watch u tube.. 56K here.. But the scene when Gus gets bucked off his horse looked great..I think I heard that wasn't scripted..But the lighting had a quality to it that made it look like a Frederick Remington painting come to life.. and +1 w/C.Cash..

Read the post heading and immediately the picture of Gus slapping that bartender with his Walker popped into my head. Still my favorite television production of all time.

...well, I have not had a chance to see the whole movie. However, the scene where Kenny Rogers defends his son is quite memorable. Kenny does not tollerate rudeness:

Silver Spoons turned in a good performance, too.

I think you mean Tommy Lee Jones, Hagler. Although he does look a bit like Kenny Rogers.
cheers.

To pick just one scene as a favorite from that whole production would be a disservice, I liked them all... Yeah maybe some more than others, but the whole movie was great.

Here's the quirting scene:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEwADbas7L0&NR=1

Another one of my favorite scenes is when Gus has the wagon loaded up for the drive, including the "We don't rent Pigs" company sign, and he's sitting in the wagon looking over the old homestead with all the memories floating through. Most of us have had moments like that where we know major change is here, and we are sad to leave a lifetime of memories behind but we know we must ride into the future. If the movie was real that is....

My wife and I had just finished watching an episode of "The Band Of Brother's". She was reading Lonesome Dove at the time. In a puzzled voice she asked me, " What kind of women have I become? Watching war movies and reading cowboy books!"

Both of those, "Band of Brothers" and "Lonesome Dove", are ones when I hear them mentioned I think " I'll have to watch that again."

Of course you've all already seen "Secondhand Lions", and the scene when they're eating barbecue and the punks come in reminds me a lot of that LD scene. A speech every boy needs to hear.

Lonesome Dove is my favorite movie of all time, by far. I like the bar scene, and the long range shot, and the army scout scene. None of the movie is bad.

Yep, probably the best western ever made. Several good scenes, I probably like the scene where Newt gets quirted, and Call comes to the rescue, the best.

I'm no captain anything, but I've been known to mirror ole Augustus McCrae in the bar scene. At least my current partners think I'm a cranky, set in my ways fanny burp.

For any who have not watched Lonesome Dove, read the novel by Larry McMurtry first, then watch the movie.

Yes you do!

I am glad to see that many here agree with me that "Lonesome Dove" is the best western ever made, whether a TV mini-series or for the movie theater.

I have it on DVD. This thread has given me a hankerin' to pull it out and watch it again.

"Lonesome Dove" is one of the few movies made from a novel that follows the book almost verbatim. I saw the movie before I read the book and enjoyed both equally. It is McMurtry's best by far.

Ol' Gus reminds me of an Uncle on my Mother's side that died a few years ago at the age of 92. He was quite a rascal and ladies man even late in life. And he didn't take no guff off nobody. You have to watch out for those ol' timers!

Woodrow reminds me of another Uncle on my Mother's side who died recently at 90. He was quite and slow to anger, but you didn't want to get on his bad side. Both were fine men and I miss them dearly. If I am judged half the man they were, I will be satisfied.
