Colt SAA what's it really worth?

Post by ceb »

I see prices on these all over the place. I have a 3rd gen Colt SAA .45 colt, blue color case, 5 1/2", black powder frame. Its had one box of Winchester Cowboy loads through it. It was then cleaned and put in its original box. I really have no use for it and thought of selling it. But in trying to find pricing, I see some priced all over the place. What's fair?

Greetings
When I want an idea about prices I go to Gunbroker and see what items have sold for. People ask the moon and maybe some one has a pockets full of moon rocks to buy with... but that is not where most of us fit in.
I watch them off and on.. $1200 may get yours sold after a while. So it comes down to how fast do you want to sell it. Naturally condition, barrel length, caliber affects everything. The 3rd Gen. have a little less sellability due to the sights. Most cowboy types want the old type "sights" so that cuts out a bunch of shooters. Hunters (me) like the adjustables.
So head to the "Auctions" and all the other computer sellers and see what is cooking.

These are good examples of what people are "willing to pay". It's not necessarily what they are worth, but the condition and photos explain why. Now if you're asking why the "snake" series bring big money I have no idea.

.

In reality, it's worth exactly the number of dolllars that somebody's actually willing to pay for it, today - no more, no less.

Absolutely, the best way to determine that value is to place it in a well-attended, guns-only auction - an online auction usually bringing the best value.

I place my whatever in a 7-day auction, w/o a reserve, with an opening bid of $0.01; then sit back and watch the fun.

Unless you need to eat, my suggestion is to keep it. Third generation single action Colts have been stagnate for some years now and in my experience, when this happens, somethings gonna happen.

The factory is losing business big time in the AR world as every fourth company in the U.S. is making these guns and one thing for sure, their manufacture of overpriced ancient revolvers has not been their bread and butter.

Like their snake guns, when Colt goes down, SAA's will double in $$ overnight.

SAA's are all over the place when it comes to price. There's a million variations. Scour the Internet for the exact variation you have.....generation, caliber, barrel length, etc. and when you find some, take an average and deduct 15-20% for the BS, and you will get a real world going-for-the-time price.-----6

Your black powder frame is a sought after piece. Does it have a beveled cylinder ? meaning the front of the cylinder is beveled and not straight cut.

I would say you could get $1300.00 for it any day of the week. If you do not need the money, just sit back and watch your investment grow.
I bought a Pair of Custom Shop Colts 8 years ago. Best investment I ever made. And the good part is I get to shoot them any time I want.

You shot one box and quit? Buy some more. Start reloading for it. Start casting your own bullets. I thought this stuff was more addictive than cigarettes.
As to your question though; SAAs come through my collection regularly. The 5 1/2" barrel is the least sought after of the three but the "black powder" frame is a plus and with the box, (try to keep it nice) I'd expect to get twelve to thirteen hundred for it.

So true. I think it's because the 3rd gens made in the late 80 to mid 90's suffered some QC issues that I think have affected all the 3rds.

For pricing, I go to GunBroker and after logging in I search the completed solded auctions. They will give you a true look at what the guns actually sold for.
