First day fishing.

Post by Tycer »

Nancy got a Tenkara fly rod for her birthday from our son. Got a lesson from a great guide today. She caught several fish during her half day lesson. This one was the best picture. I did not catch a fish.

Nice! I had not heard of Tenkara. I would guess that it would be entirely adequate for 99.9% of the fish I've caught on a fly rod. Looks like great fun, thanks for the post! :)

Just enough concentration required to make you forget EVERYTHING else. It doesn't get any better then that.

I've never heard of tenkara before but when I was just a lad my Dad outfitted me with an old fly rod with no reel. He just wound some floating line around the butt and rigged it like any other rod. When I needed more line I could unwrap some and a simple half hitch would keep it from falling off. When less was needed I simply wrapped it around the butt. We fished mostly wet flies or popping bugs for perch, our preferred bait for big catfish. Sometimes I would tie on 5 flies and catch at least 3 or more on a single cast. We were out for quantity. Size didn't matter. Catching the bait was the job of we kids and we worked hard at it. It was great fun.

Looks like fun. My wife and I are taking fly fishing lessons from a friend here in KC. Then this summer we plan to go west (CO) to try some fishing there.

Enjoyed your photos.

Hondo, tenkara is easier and more natural than fly fishing. There is no reel. You have a fixed length of line. The length of the rod keeps the line out of the water so you get natural floats of the tenkara fly.

I wonder how that would work with an old cane pole I've had laying around for a few decades ? Never thought to try it with fly line .

in the old days, it was all the same - all line was braided silk and if you wanted it to be floating (fly line) you varnished and waxed it
