(Archery) Homemade Turkey Thumper.

Post by cshold »

I'm going to use my X bow for turkey in the spring.
I really don't want to use a broad head.
Decided to try my hand at making my own small game thumper.
I used a perfect fitting steel washer and turned down a field point to get a combined weight of 100 grains.

Nice 8)
I ground my flat washers to equal sided triangles. I believe they work well on pheasant and rabbit

I tried to drill 100% copper pennies from the 70's.
After the third one I gave up.
I just couldn't get a true centered hole.

Tooling a punch and die machine is best but costly.
I made a simple tool for a fly press at work to form my triangle so the points point forward.
They worked too.

I just got me a cheap flat bow#50, I can not believe how nice it is shoot, now where did I put those washers :D

Do you need a headshot to DRT a turkey?

I don't think so Blaine.
It's all about achieving blunt force trauma with thumpers.

WOW!!
It works perfect...

25 yard shot.
You can see the impact imprint and slight pentration in the target block.
That's a .75 caliber hole through that gourd. :D

I know, I'm being ornery, but why is that better than a broadhead? :)

Supposedly small game blunts are less destructive on game.
In my mind the jury is still out on that.

More likely to lose and or wreak an expensive broad head.
I do believe that. The kind I use are $40.00+ for a 3 pack.

Years ago we were gluing 38 special cases on arrows for a pretty good blunt.

I think I would try the blunt on some varmints and small game first. I have shot judo points through a rabbits head and even heard of a pronghorn being killed by one. I would also look into a cheaper expandable for turkey.
I question this because I saw feathers stop a lot of shot from a shotgun and personally would feel better cutting through, but wish you success and know it would be a small game killer.

I'm not to concerned about the lethality of that 367 grain bolt & blunt combination pushing 320 fps.
Meat destruction is more my concern.

Many don't consider the turkey to be small game. While that head would be superb on game such as rabbit and squirrel, I personally wouldn't use it on turkey. After 44yrs of bowhunting experience, for me anything groundhog size and up gets a sharp broadhead.

I know without hesitation the one in that picture best used on that type of individual.
He was pure evil in my opinion.
