OT - 45-70 TC Encore action strength

Post by AJMD429 »

Anyone have an idea whether the Thompson Center Encore breakopen design would be stronger or weaker than the Marlin 1895?

After all, they make the Encore in .416 Rigby

Just curious; was thinking about making up some stout loads

The Encore should be able to take some stout loads.I deduce this due to some of the high intensity rifle cartridges(pressure wise) it is chambered in. !

I wonder how much pressure the Marlin can take before we see these catastrophic ruptures.

But on your question, the Encore must be stronger by a good bit.

I think that with the Encore system the limit is on breach thrust as it is with the smaller Contender. As I understand it, they do not chamber the Encore for some cartridges because of this. IOW, too much pressure on too broad a base.

The .45-70 should be able to be loaded beyond your desire to shoot it or about 45K psi/cup. I don't think I'd take it to the Ruger #1 level. However, you have to remember that every gun is different.
Sincerely,
